All done by 2035 sounds utterly insane. I live and commute in the area and it took about 2-4 years for them to redo the stretch of M3 from Heathrow all the way down 3/4 junctions, similarly with the M25 section they’ve been doing for years now on the way to Gatwick.
The government are being extremely naive if they think, and Heathrow believes this will be done within 10 years, and moving a whole stretch of the M25 as well? Those road works will be nothing short of carnage for the whole local area, and anyone who frequently uses that section of M25 will agree. Madness.

I really admire Labours position that if any airport in the UK wants to expand we should strive to let them. Its time we tear down this NIMBY era and embrace the successes of places like Manchester.

Bad decision – this will get very delayed and over budget (and £48bn for a single runway is poor value already, for comparison e.g. Dubai’s entire completely new *five runway* airport is projected to cost $35bn) like no tomorrow like every other construction project in this country.
The shorter runway option was much better imo (given the reality of how shitty we are in building big, see HS2 etc), much less complexity and much less risk.

Is there any reason why we can’t just expand Stanstead instead and upgrade the surface transport links?

The amount of jobs and boost to the economy expanding Heathrow will bring into the country has always outweighed the negatives! Time to get it done at last !!!!!

I cannot understand how a runway can possibly cost 21 BILLION… for the runway alone.

>The proposal is still subject to the planning process, including consultation and parliamentary scrutiny.
I think we all know how this ends.
See you in 2039 for the next attempt (or two).

And this ladies and gentlemen is why the UK is so utterly done on the world stage.
It’ll be 2029 before the planning application could possibly/maybe be approved! (and we all know it won’t be and then itll be into the 2030s before its approved with the costs spiralling)
And thats just the planning… The construction will take several years as well. If it’s complete and open by 2040 it’ll be a miracle.
In China this would’ve been built and operating by 2029. (or more likely earlier than that)
