paywall, but whatever, there’s little need to read about what russians want to do in Mariupol. You can watch the freely available 20 days in Mariupol documentary. That was just the first 20 days, not the full extent of the damage, and recorded by a couple of guys who made really fucking sure to avoid getting close to the invaders.
So any “reconstruction” (quick, cheap and shitty, just to look good for pictures from certain streets and certain angles) is literally built on bodies of the people who died there.

It’s ironic isn’t it, wasn’t that their imaginary injustice they said when illegally invading and occupying the place in the first place.
Russia is extensively reconstructing Mariupol after the brutal 2022 siege that devastated the city, investing billions into new apartment buildings and infrastructure. However, the reconstruction faces significant criticism from residents.
Key issues include: Many original Ukrainian residents cannot afford the new apartments (starting at $100,000), while those who fled and didn’t take Russian citizenship are having their properties confiscated as “abandoned.” The city is undergoing “Russification” – Ukrainian monuments removed, streets renamed, and Russian symbols everywhere.
Property rights have become problematic as changed street names and building numbers have invalidated Ukrainian deeds. Residents who waited for promised replacement housing on their original sites are left in limbo, while Russians receive subsidized 2% mortgages to buy new apartments.
Despite the construction, residents describe persistent problems: inadequate public transportation, medical staff shortages, water scarcity, and some neighborhoods still looking “apocalyptic.” Some view the reconstruction as a “Potemkin village” – an attractive facade hiding deeper issues created by the invasion.
The reconstruction serves an ideological purpose, symbolizing Russia’s claim to historically contested territory and attempting to erase Ukrainian resistance history.

I’ve wondered for a while what the Russian plan is to repopulate Mariupol and all the other devastated Donbas towns. Tax incentives and giving veterans apartments there? Migrants from Central Asia, maybe even North Koreans? It just seems like a fool’s errand.

the fact that we will never know the true scale of mass-murder against the Mariupol population is truly heart-breaking. I hope that one day in the future, justice will be possible.

And in Ukraine (naturally) everything Russian must go. The whole war is the messy divorce of two countries, fighting over who gets to keep what.
