I’m shocked. Finland used to have a very strong employment market.

I read the article, and despite the headline, officials say the situation is improving.

My prediction is that it will get worse for the next 1.5 years until Kokoomus is voted out. If they somehow get back in, be ready for 5.5 more years of Austerity and worsening unemployment from now.
I will be long gone before that happens. Salary isn’t increasing, investment opportunities suck, better off going somewhere the money is flowing, Thanks Kokoomus.

How impactful have Russian relations been to this? I would expect detiorating trade with such a big economy next door would have a big impact.

Is it maybe run now by populist right wing government?
Just a hunch 🙂

As usual people are blaming whatever the current government is for something that has been an obvious trend for 20 or even 30 years. Also demanding that government spends more is not going to produce anything. For some reason people think that if every citizen is given 1000€ and they spend it on new iphone and ordering pizza, economy will grow like some arcane magic was involved. If it was so easy, why doesn’t every country’s do it then?
To have a stable real economy it needs to je backed by production of actual good and services that can be exported and used as part of production for higher valued products. We need capital, investments, companies, competitive pricing and less bureaucracy.
Finland has a dire need for reforms but noone is willing to make them.

It’s worth noting that the number reported by the statistics agency is a lot lower than the actual number of unemployed people. One hr/wk of work is enough to classify as employed.
KEHA-keskus reports that there were 313,627 “unemployed” people at the end of October (vs. 276,000 in the YLE article). Also there were 87,000 outside the labor force (incl. various often kinda bullshit training programs, e.g. storage work for 9€/day) and 51,000 part-timers.
All in all, 520,000 registered jobseekers and 27,000 job openings :I
Exports are down, high government debt, rapidly aging population, AI and automation replacing entry level jobs and high employee protections and cost.
So it’s risky for businesses to hire when things are slow, and the government also needs to get their spending down. In addition to the usual ai and automation taking place across the world.

My Finnish coworker said that no young people want to work anymore since the government just pays you to just do nothing and that’s fine with many. Often brings up how his friends children just sit at home and do nothing. We work in Sweden. Unemployment payments aren’t anything new but he said it’s something different. Maybe some Finn here can explain what’s actually going on there.

Next trimester expect for Spain to be lower than Finland. And that’s while growing population half a million a year thanks to immigration.

Doesnt matter. They could have 99% unemployment and still be the worlds happiest people.

What can actually be done to solve this?
