So both a band 2 HCA and a band 3 HCA are on minimum wage now? I can’t believe that’s right, it would be incredible. You can’t have them both on minimum wage as they have different levels of skill/responsibility.

The problem is that companies will just put prices up and cut their staff, because god forbid CEOs and Exec’s don’t get their millions in bonuses. Expect lots of cuts in January even though companies are making record profits. Infinite growth and all that.

Forcing up the minimum wage is poorly thought out policy, the end result is just businesses putting up prices in reaction and driving inflation. Also, if every job is minimum wage, then there’s no incentive to do the worse jobs, as someone else mentioned, including those in the public sector.

This type of increase works if enacted alongside business friendly policies or growth making policies.
If you force a restaurant to pay more you either reduce profits or increase prices, likely the later. All that happens is lower demand, more closures and more job losses.
Why are you going to employ 18 year olds if you are pricing out their employment?
I suppose of Labour freeze thresholds until 2030 i suppose the end game is that all employees start paying income tax.

This is a difficult topic to discuss but I do think we’re hitting a point where minimum wage increases aren’t necessarily actually helping, just driving further inflation, and we’d probably do better to address the root causes of our CoL being so high. We already have one of the highest minimum wages in the world. If the problem was “just pay people more” than we’d already have solved it frankly. Meanwhile the level of wage compression for people above the minimum rate has gotten properly and increasingly silly where there is less and less incentive to bother trying to progress along a career.

Given that it seems the Government are really firm on getting minimum wage to be 2/3 of median wage how about we just use that to guide other payments too?
Change the state pension to be a fixed 1/3 of MW. Get rid of the various top up schemes. If you qualify, this is what you get.
I’m sure you could also tie council tax too in door way.

This sounds great until you remember that the employee has to pay tax, NI & possibly pension on this and the employer has to pay NI and pension too. So it costs the employer more to give the raise than the employee gets in spending power.
I wonder how they’ll fund the short fall, I won’t possibly be in price rises or “efficiency” measures will it.

I do think the government needs to think more about the above inflation minimum pay rises.
I really do think that this is pushing more of the terrible gig work scam going on at the moment where companies are trying to push people to be self employed as ‘gig’ workers.

Obviously this move will have its positives, but as a 19 year old, so many of my friends have struggled to get part time work during uni/ school and during the summer holidays over the past few years as there is already so little going. This will just make it even harder for people around my age to get summer jobs or part time work

A plaster on a flesh wound. Ultimately, the only way for a country to get reliably richer is to move more of its population from low value-add roles into high value-add roles. Developing countries do this by exporting incrementally more sophisticated products to richer countries, increasing the skill level of their workforce as they go.

Literally just going to lead to a load of people going from minimum wage to £0 wage, and likely also some not on the minimum wage as well. Absolutely incredible that they learned nothing from the last budget.

Good news for low earners but majority who do jobs with responsibility its a kick in the teeth. If the Government actually fixed issues like energy costs, food and rent/morgates fee costs.
Then more people would have more money in their pockets. Instead inflation keeps majority of the countries wages suppressed and most people keep on struggling paycheck to paycheck. Its absolutely pointless trying to build a life in the UK due to Greed. I’m on 31,500 and barely make ends meat when bills, rent, food and transport costs are taken. Can’t wait for more of my taxes to to up too!

Meanwhile rent has increased by about 7% and cost of living about 3.6% meaning that a minimum wage employee will still be worse off then they were a year ago rent alone would’ve increased by about £1700 a year on average easily wiping out any extra income from this increase. Good start though definitely good news.

Just put it up to £100k and legislate that everyone gets an apartment that they can’t be kicked out of it and can’t have their energy shut off.
I mean thats how they think the world works right so just go all the way, what could go wrong?
