Russia has no veto over Kyiv’s bid to join NATO, alliance chief Mark Rutte said on Wednesday — rebuffing a peace deal proposal floated by Moscow and Washington that would block Ukraine from the alliance.
“Russia has neither a vote nor a veto over who can be a member of NATO,” Rutte said in an interview with El País and German outlet RND. The alliance’s founding Washington Treaty “allows any country in the Euro-Atlantic area to join,” he added.
Rutte’s comments follow a U.S.-led proposal to end Russia’s full-scale war, leaked last week, which included the provision that NATO agree “it will not accept Ukraine at any moment in the future.”

If Russia gets a veto on anybody, much less Ukraine joining NATO then all NATO countries are signing off a part of their own sovereignty and any potential members sovereignty over to Russia. That in it of itself is a non starter and unacceptable.

It’s easy to agree with Rutte’s words, *”Russia has neither a vote nor a veto over who can be a member of NATO”*, which is just a simple statement of facts (I don’t think that anyone thinks otherwise?).
Yet, in *practice* Russia holds and uses another instrument to “veto” NATO membership: Aggression.
>The background was that President Putin declared in the autumn of 2021, and actually sent a draft treaty that they wanted NATO to sign, to promise no more NATO enlargement. That was what he sent us. And was a pre-condition for not invade Ukraine. Of course we didn’t sign that. … We rejected that. So he went to war to prevent NATO, more NATO, close to his borders.
As long as a country is in an border conflict, it can not join NATO. All Russia has to do is to invade a country to prevent it from joining. So like it or not, it’s not a formal veto, but a de-factor veto.

NATO is dead. You have american president making promises in ukraine-russia peace deal on behalf of europe without consulting europeans. You have americans siding with adversary against which NATO was created. You have americans threatning territorial integrity and sovereignity of EU country. If you dont see NATO is dead you are blind. Americans only keep NATO now to keep weapons customers and for possible convenience for future illegal invasions.
Europe should leave NATO and form its own defense organization which focuses solely on defending europe from outer threats like russia or US.

I think I’m mostly offended by the fact that Rutte had to make a statement about this.
NATO was created against Russia. It literally goes without saying that Russia has no say in whether a country currently invaded by Russia can join NATO or not. Having to state something this obvious means that there are enough people on this planet who don’t understand this. What the fuck?

Who needs NATO at this point? This war shown that in the end of the day you are alone when the time comes

Why would the Russians insist on a veto when they already have Hungary and Slovakia?
