During yet another Russian attack on Kyiv, renowned Ukrainian puppet maker and set designer Vadym Tupchii was killed.

PEN Ukraine reported that the drone strike destroyed the apartment where his works, masks, and musical instruments were stored.

Tupchii was trained as an actor. He worked as a set assembler at the Drama and Comedy Theater, and at age 21 took a job at a brass-instrument factory.

During his career – which was cut brutally short as he was only 59 – he created an enormous variety of props – from a model of the Chornobyl power plant to foam hammers, chairs, apples, and cakes.

On social media, he is being remembered as a kind and talented person. His friend, Timur Bobrovskyi, an archaeologist at the “Saint Sophia of Kyiv” National Reserve, wrote:

“One of those who took today’s bombing of Kyiv upon himself was my good friend Vadym Tupchii – incredibly creative and talented, intelligent and ironic, a brilliant master.”

According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russian forces launched 22 missiles of various types and more than 460 drones at Ukraine that night. Some drones crossed into Moldova and Romania. Ukrainian air defenses shot down 452 enemy targets.
