I hope this thread doesn’t turn into whataboutism and we all just agree that something needs to be done to keep people safe at night. That begins with community, with support from those who receive our tax money.

Honestly we need to change the timezones in this country.
Its stupid we choose to make it dark at half 4. People finish work and its pitch black for 1/3 of the year.
For the sake of farmers?? Seems like a really imbalanced system we just keep because its easier than doing anything about it.

With these kinds of things, where do we draw the line between fear and actual harm? Is it enough to point to statistics and say that, based on the numbers, it is an acceptable risk to take a walk after dark? Is it perfectly safe? No, nothing ever is, but it may be safe enough.
Every day after work I go for a walk through the woods and along a canal in pretty much pitch black darkness. People say you should not do it because it is dangerous or they are afraid of it, but nothing has ever actually happened apart from some rogue deer, and I think once I came across a drug convoy.

Yep thanks for that. I’ll just keep running after dark and not give a shit. I refuse to live my life in fear a maybe, might or could.

Not surprising. I hate walking alone at night, too.

I have no idea what the solution to the bad behaviour is. You can educate all you like, but there will always be arseholes and the fear of encountering one (let alone actually being a victim) is a problem in its own right.
As for mitigation: running groups I guess? But that’s not suitable for everyone. It’s a shame that it’s needed, but it’s a shame that we need to lock our doors and windows at night.

I completely understand their fears. I would not run alone at night because unfortunately you can’t trust that you will be safe.
There are cases of women being assaulted or abducted and killed by someone who saw them running alone at night and took their opportunity, and although you can say it is highly unlikely, the fear does not just go away.

Is this a legitimate fear because things are dangerous, or a product of the media reporting on every single case? Leading to the perception of crime to be higher than it actually is. I was under the impression that the streets are statistically safer today than they were 20/30/40+ years ago. Granted there are less visible police on the streets compared to 5-10 years ago.
I’m not sure how we can collectively solve this problem. Even if you trebled the number of police on the streets it still wouldn’t be enough to monitor every field, park, footpath, country lane etc. Everyone should feel safe when out and about, especially when doing something that improves their physical and mental health

Even as a man I don’t like walking around at night, it’s so dark on the streets with the led lights.
