If Putin does not want to end the war, maybe Europe/EU should start talking directly with Xi Jinping about recognizing chinese claims to russian territory? You know, the ones Russia stole from Qing China back in the 19th century.

That might put a real quick end to Russia being able to bribe their assets.

Trump has no cards to play. The military-industrial complex will not allow him to stop selling weapons to Ukraine. The threat of removing intel sharing is not enough leverage.

This is your reminder that Trump LOVES the appearance of being strong and in charge, getting credit, and making “deals” but has no idea how governance or management actually work in the real world.

Most of his life he simply bluffs and postures, takes people to court if they don’t accept his terms, and loses in court…but “wins” because he ignores the court and the other party (usually) can’t afford or doesn’t want to bother pursuing enforcement.

In business, it’s one thing if the contractor decides to move on to another job rather than pursue the money they are owed from you. In government, things work a little differently and people actually want or need you to go through the process. And with an population-sized existential threat, people will actually try to hold you to more than just appearances and bluster. This is something Trump doesn’t think is real, or if he understands it is real then he thinks it is for suckers and losers (and not for him).

In his first term he mostly populated his administration with people who had government experience, or experience running large companies and corporate boards, and they kept things somewhat on track. But in this administration he is hiring sycophants, clowns, idiots, and people like him who have made their life from “bluff and bluster” — for example, Pete Hegseth was a political talk show host used to being able to show up drunk, mock everyone, and go home with a paycheck. Steve Witkoff is a real estate developer / mafioso like Donald Trump. Lindsey Halligan was a lawyer who handled issues for a parking lot company; needless to say, resolving parking and crash disputes is very different from handling federal racketeering prosecutions…yet, here we are. Kash Patel is a tough-talking podcaster (who turns out to be an incompetent pussy, but I digress).

Trump loves the appearance of all this, and fancies himself the king of a reality tv show. And instead of hiring showrunners who can run a show, he hired people who might look good in the advertising but have no relevant skills.
