The article isnt wrong, but it misses one of the key problems with Europe. It isnt one voice. It isnt even 3 voices, it is a lot of differing views that frequently struggle to find common ground. The prime example is Hungary / Orban, they will derail anything that truly punishes Russia.

The EU needs smaller, focused groups that should act for the majority.

This is what you get with spineless centrists in power

European leaders and governments are just too electoralist to make any decisive decisions that could hinder a reelection. They think at a max length of 4 years time, unlike countries like China or Russia that can sustain unpopular decisions because they can’t be removed from office, or countries like USA where Trump just doesn’t give a fuck.

Europe acts smaller than it has to be. The economy is on par with major blocs out there and actually much bigger than Russia, but constantly we act like we have to tip toe around putin’s feelings.

Likewise trump is a bully but placating him does only make him more greedy and visibly contempt.

You can forget about Europe acting as a single geopolitical heavy weight as long as it isn’t a single political entity

Europe is a beggar state at this point pushed around by Trump tariffs, cold shoulder and facing Putin’s resentment on the other side. Their only hope is with China.

They will blame Zelensky, put him in jail and once economic variables are re-set people are back to being chum chum with each other. Some EU and non-EU nations profited significantly from the war but this rarely comes through among the anti immigration sentiment. Embarrassing for grown adults to miss the mark on diplomacy to this extent.

Honestly, why enlarge EU? It should be small group of wealthy democracies, not 27 different countries, ranging from ultra wealthy to very poor. You can’t be strong when you are so fragmented and different

Europe needs to do is test its war toys in a limited area and strengthen its deterrent. There’s a lot of talk, little action. And also, bring back compulsory military service. Without brut force world politics can not runs.

    Holy shit politico is cooked.

It’s so obsessed with strength and being a great power.

Weve tried great power politics, that’s how we got WW1&2.

Everyone wants europe to move faster but it’s a lot of different people with different ideas and beliefs.

I’d be far more worried if managing a landmass this large and diverse was an easy or straightforward process.

  10. The author of the article forgets that this “weak Europe” is the force that’s actually maintaining global stability today. First of all, the EU is what’s holding Ukraine’s rear. Yes, they say no decision has been made on Russian assets, but Ukraine is still being funded steadily.
European weapons factories have ramped up, especially this year (for exp. Rheinmetall shares have more than quadrupled in just one year, thanks to the Orange Idiot.) . Europe, together with Ukraine, has matched Russia’s artillery stockpiles. It has developed drone and anti-drone production.
And the US isn’t deciding anything about Ukraine anymore. All these “peace negotiations” are just empty noise. These talks don’t decide ANYTHING. The US can’t decide anything regarding Ukraine now; they’ve already stepped out of providing aid and are no longer an ally, at most a partner. The main player on Ukraine is the EU, and if the author of the article doesn’t understand that, that’s their problem.

  11. Another day, another Politico article slamming the EU. Starting to think this sub is useless.
