> They argue such a move is a desperate attempt to paper over the cracks in the German car industry, adding that it will not just prolong take up of electric vehicles but inadvertently hand the advantage to China.
Volvo and Polestar are just Geely in disguise
We should stick to the plan, but I’d like to remember everyone that Volvo is owned by a Chinese company.
Chinese cheap coal is running out and there will be a hot war
this decade.
They will absolutely stop, one way or another.
It is unfair to the companies that invested in the switch, compared to other companies that invested in lobbying to undo the switch. They do have a point. But of course the reality is that the switch would harm the European brands and favour the Chinese brands.
2035 is a decade away.
If legacy automakers cant develop something decent by then, just give up
China started this whole EV story more than a decade ago.
China specializes in electric vehicles so why would this harm them? They already lead in battery technology so everyone else is chasing after them
To anyone saying Volvo and Polestar are Chinese:
No they arent. They have a holding above them that is Chinese. And a (large) part of their shares is owned by Chinese. Like Skoda has a german holding above them, but is a Czech brand, not a german one. Or Opel is german, even though owned by Stellantis. Just because Volvo and Polestar have Chinese backing, it does not make them Chinese.
That said, yes this favors Chinese brands. They produce a shitload of EVs which they sell here. They sell some ICE cars, but they dont sell well. Their EVs do.
That said nr 2: Volvo and Polestar are right to ask this. Brands make their roadmap based on regulations. If the regulations change, the roadmap changes. Thats a financial hit to take.
Why do we care? It’s not like EVs are revolutionary tech
We set an ambitious target to combat climat change. This would very obviously open a massive market gap for anyone to capture. European market manufacturers did… what? I’m not a sinobot by any measure, but credit where credit is due. At least the Chinese are not corrupt idiots, like our own auto industry seems to be.
Volvo and Polestar are owned by a Chinese company called Geely. Their intentions may not be for the best interest of Europe
Climate be damned….our companies need massive profits.
