It’s going to happen anyway, the United States has, as main priorities, the safety of Taiwan and Israel, as said many times, for obvious reasons, or even some raids in its “backyard” or in other continents, even. The earlier European countries realise it, the better.
Besides, it’s not that the USA is looking like a reliable ally.

Tbf this might be a good thing. European countries will finally have to take their own defence seriously and not freeload on the US anymore. And they might finally stop buying US equipment just to buy US protection, and finally build their own stuff, or at least buy from other european countries. I only see positives in this.

It’d be good news, if Europe were even remotely ready to fill this massive void in their security and pull its own weight, which it basically stopped doing when cold war ended.
There are very few armies in Europe that’d actually be ready to wage a real war of any kind. Armies that have the manpower, readiness to take serious losses, ability to replace casualties from a large reserve, logistics involved in huge troop movements, resupply etc. Those things just aren’t there.
Even now, nobody in central Europe is even speaking of restoring mandatory military service. Almost nobody in Europe is even remotely ready to fight in a real war of any kind. Finland is some sort of massive regional giant in this regard, and that is so fucking horrible. We’re a small country, we should not be able to appear large in comparsion to various central European nations with 20 x our population. Fuck.
Europe is ..what, at least 10 years away from being credible enough to have some sort of preventive dimension that makes russia ” think twice”. Assuming it spends 10 years working to build such. That’d involve some massive change in way normal people and average voters across Europe approach security, self defense, European unity. I’m not sure what it takes to even begin such progress.

It’s time to grow up. The miracle of the Western peace is over, and the old ways are back (if they were ever gone in the first place). Those who won’t fend for themselves (out of impotence or pacifistic delusions) will be crushed, so this withdrawal is a blessing in disguise. Moreover, in older times, one would’ve had to fight the foreign military to remove them from one’s soil, yet the yanks wish to pull out on their own volition.

The US is going to give Russia a Ukerainian victory. Russians have said that next is Eastern EU, particularly Balkins, Finland and Poland. Given the US opinion of Russia, it’s no surprise that they want to get out of Europe.
And no, the US will not defend Taiwan either. That would mean upsetting China.

If you form the AEPAC – American Europe Public Affairs Committee, that institution can bribe the american senators and their army remains here.

At this point, why? Let them leave. It’ll take time and we can build the military we have.
It sucks to be losing the USA, but if we can’t trust they are going to be on our side on things like Ukraine… what’s even the point?

Anyone have the Bloomberg article? The linked article doesn’t show many details. I don’t mind reducing US bases and presence in EU and ramping up our own militaries. Reinforcements for Romania shouldn’t take weeks.
I also don’t believe the US wants to leave EU entirely because they have some important strategic bases here.

Which would make sense. Russia just is not a big threat to the US, China is. China is a far greater priority to deal with than Russia. Moreover, Ukraine is also just not even remotely as important as Taiwan

Relax, let the Americans go. But at the same time, they must be informed that from this point on, Europe will have no obligations to the US. We are abandoning the primacy of the dollar, American corporations will be treated like any other, and the embargo on Iranian oil will be lifted. And a clear declaration that in the event of a conflict between China and the US, Europe will remain completely neutral.

And you guys wonder why America doesn’t be involved anymore. Europeans are unreliable allies and are projecting their failures onto the United States.

JFC do you guys just not read any of these stories? This is getting absolutely insane. Its a troop reduction not withdrawal.
The post where Putin talks about attacking Europe, you all agree europe on its own could defend itself , but it wouldn’t have to because plenty of American soldiers are still in europe, even after a reduction.
You want a more equal relationship with the US, but have these wild reactions with the hint the US may move some troops around.

As an American/European (dual identity but via Ireland), i think regardless of whether Kamala or Trump, Europe has been over due for being more independent from the US and having its own capable forces that can be readily deployed. I know Europe has in general a large military and many countries are very well equipped and armed. But its not the same thing. And in the wake of Rissia annexing Crimea theres still not been any large movement to address it ourselves. Theres of course many nuances and complications with voters and general society of wanting to re arm and increase military spending, but not having a stronger, unified force is not possible anymore.
And sentiment in the US to keep soldiers all around the world, let alone Europe, while we “pay” for it is definitely decreasing. This is of course not how it works but its how many voters in the US think of it. Trump only really has accelerated this idea, although in the worst way possible. I domt think any of whats happening now is at all the optimal or best way to increase European capabilities and rely less om US troops presence and protection.
Europe has a lot of its own problems. Many of which the US started to have many many years ago. I think re-arming is one of the easier problems to solve. Especially with the current shifting of power. Europe not standing up to Russian aggression in the last 3 years is making it worse. The US helped a lot but it was never going to have the same stake or will to intervene that Europe has. And its not like Russia is wiping the floor with Ukraine. I dunno. . Its sub optimal for everyone thats not a war mongering leader right now.

If all it takes for you to consider someone “not an ally” is 2 years of BS and restrictions. Plenty of you need to look at your relationships at home. So many of you engaged in the purest form of xenophobia and hatred against Americans for the better part of a decade. So much so the next generation does it like it’s normal. Kinda like the racism. It’s always been “the US isn’t the world police”. Now they are leaving and you’re finding a way to blame them. Blame its people. Which is ironic because we should have qualms with the US government. The Americans should have anger towards Europeans.
You people need to get a grip and realize the vacuum is gone. The let’s hate and make fun of Americans, while clearly benefiting from them is gone. The let’s talk down on their culture and flaws while having raging problems of our own. 1600 people obviously isn’t the whole of Europe but it’s a great sample size. You can’t demand no more US influence, get what you demand, then claim they are allies are you hate them even more for doing what you’ve demanded.
