>A ban on smartphones for children under 13 would be primarily unproductive because such a rule would be difficult to enforce. “Such a ban is easy to circumvent, especially if there’s no support among the children themselves,” says media psychologist Laura Vandenbosch (KU Leuven), who co-authored the new report from the Superior Health Council.

Ok. Following same argument, why don’t they end with the driving speed limits, because it is very difficult to enforce and many drivers will circumvent it? Think the same with children just driving cars or motorbikes, or drinking alcohol or take drugs. “It is hard to enforce” is a weak argument.

It does not have to be a full “ban on smartphones for everyone under 18”, but it should be a strong message from authorities to push for a reduction, especially for kids under 13. It is evident that a kid does not have a smartphone for emergency calls or say I will be late. That can be done with any dumbphone. They get into social media and most are vulnerable to addictive sites, bullying or porn. Children should be better protected.
