First time in a decade it’s put me on my arse. Two solid days in bed unable to get up. Took about 2 weeks before I was feeling even slightly normal again.

It’s flu season — or am I missing something with this news?

  3. The number of flu patients in hospital beds across England is more than 50% higher than the same period in 2024, according to NHS data.

An average of 1,717 patients were in beds in England each day last week, including 69 in critical care.

This is an increase of 56% for the same week in 2024, where the total was 1,098, with 39 in critical care.

The number is also higher than 2023, when there were an average of 243 flu patients, and 2022 with an average of 772.

The figures have been published in the first of this year’s NHS winter situation reports.

I get the vaccine every year cause my immune system is shite, but christ; even with it the flu this year had me in bed for a week straight with a fever coughing my guts up. God knows how I would have been if I didn’t get jabbed 🤣.

  5. The strain this year is supposed to be a really bad one…… something is currently working its way though our office at work.

During “Covid” when they called Flu “Covid” weren’t people told to stay at home if they had Flu symptoms?

  7. Sudden-Conclusion931 on

Very virulent strain this year. Lots of young people going to ICU. People massively underestimate how serious it can be. It’s not just a nasty cold with a temperature. Proper flu will take weeks to fully recover from. A friend of mine in his late 30’s is now waiting for a heart transplant because of what flu did to him a few years ago.

Had it really bad in 2022,2023 and 2024. Decided to get the jab this year as a result and touch wood been ok. I’m a 30 year old man in otherwise good health for context

They should pick the anti vaxers from the bunch and chuck them out on the streets. Wasting a bed.

It’s particularly rough this year. One of my colleagues was off for a week and a half, and still isn’t really right after three weeks. They’re in relative good health in their mid 30s…

  11. Correlation, not Causation but this year is the worst I’ve experienced for vaccine uptake. I think patients are just vaccine fatigued

Looking at the graph, the figures are 50% higher than they were in the same day last year.

But they are currently the same as the equivalent number for next week from last year.

    >”The flu season started unusually early this year and is yet to peak, so it is too soon to know how long this surge will be sustained for.”

It is currently not clear whether the curve is bigger or just earlier. From the same graph, the numbers in 2024 were higher than 2022 at this point in the year, but the peak in 2024 ended up lower than the peak in 2022.

  13. Currently sitting on a bus in a mask because I fucking hate getting even a cold, and I have a heart condition so I’m vulnerable to flu/covid. This thread makes me feel a lot less embarrassed about being the only one in a mask!!

Lost my grandmother to this. Caught flu in hospital then got pneunmonia.

Flu seems also to be the silent threat as I remember hearing in 2019 it was nearly a epidemic.

This one knocked me sideways, not been this ill in years. Full two weeks of symptoms. About 5 weeks past and still not 100%. Tried my first big bike ride yesterday and boy it was hard, feeling it today. Hopefully upwards from here.

Double vaxxed by every end November (should have been October really). I’ve got brilliant WiFi as well as protection.

  17. AllanSundry2020 on

not trolling or anything, but I’m curious how can they tell this is Flu and not Covid? No one tests for Covid really now so if the symptoms are similar then how would you know?

given I know several people who did test in past couple months with fever, headache and cough sneezing and it was Covid.

My kids school is currently getting wiped out by the flu, never seen it so bad this early in winter. Like 90 odd students off. This is after they’ve all had the flu vaccine. Did the vaccine predict the wrong strain this year ?

  19. Lagrangio on

Just another reason why people should take the flu vaccine (ofcourse most vulnerable first but rest next) and why we should have a minimum quota for remote work in jobs that don’t need to be frontward facing

  20. Hunter199090 on

Wes Streeting should order a review to make sure it’s not over diagnosed.

This year is H3N2 (Aussie Flu). Always horrible and when it does the rounds it’s always a bad flu season. It got me in 2017 and 2022, obviously at Xmas, so I got the jab for the first time ever.

  22. so from 2 to 3? or 200 to 300? or 20,000 to 30,000? or what? fucking headline writers trying to clickbait me. wont work.

  23. Important_March1933 on

I’m not surprised, people have learnt fuck all from COVID. People don’t wash their hands enough for starters. On a train recently, a guy was coughing his guts up against the handrail, not even covering his mouth up.

  24. Reflex81 on

In other news, in an odd coincidence, uptake of the flu jab fell by 50% across England.

My 40yo OH has had the worst cough I’ve ever heard. Genuinely horrible and concerned for a bit.
