In a last minute turn, the Council Commissioner was met with strong resistance against Chat Control by Parliament.

    >Parliament enters negotiations with a clear alternative model: Mandatory but targeted surveillance only where reasonable suspicion exists and with a judicial warrant, alongside a firm rejection of mandatory age checks and app lockouts for teenagers.

Surveillance only with a judicial warrant? Ok, that’s fine

    >While EU member state governments continue to push for mass scanning of private messages (at the discretion of providers), mandatory age verification for all users, and effective bans on communication apps for under-17s, the Parliament enters negotiations with a clear alternative model: Mandatory but targeted surveillance only where reasonable suspicion exists and with a judicial warrant, alongside a firm rejection of mandatory age checks and app lockouts for teenagers.

    Yay!

I really don’t like this. It will just empower people like Orban who has corrupt officials on his side and can pick and choose who to incriminate. Or come up with laws which did not exist previously which will incriminate people. “Oh look, this person said I am bad, that amounts to treason. Banish him.”

With the rise of fascist parties in Europe this can happen anywhere – over a longer period of time. Though Trump should serve as a neat example on how quickly things can change.

he doesn’t even need to be the unpopular person to bring in this kind of surveillance. EU covers the bad guy element for him, which is probably why this is being pushed at a high level, local heads of state can shrug their shoulders and say “oh it’s an EU thing, can’t change it.”

Honestly kind of relieved to see Parliament push back on blanket scanning. Maybe a small thing we can all do is email our MEPs backing this line so governments feel extra pressure.

I really hope this age verification proposal won’t go through
