This ban doesn’t go far enough. Parallel to Shrinkflation, ingredients have often been switched for artifial replacement products which are in many cases questionable. What horrified consumers as analogous cheese has made a comeback as vegan cheese in recent years. Banning such misleading labels is an effective protection against the replacement of ingredients with stuff that isn’t getting enough scrutiny both in regards to it’s culinary value and it’s health effects.

He’s got a point though, if we want people to eat less meat, these different names definitely don’t help. Any reasonable person should be able to know that “veggie burger” isn’t meat just because it has the word burger in it.

Realistically I don’t really care what people call it. But what’s the point in banning names like “veggie burger” lmao?

They are not banned. They just need to find a different name

Once the ban is lifted there will be a renaissance in shopping habits, I dont know the name of the person in charge of this stuff but c’mon, lets get this done asap!

We have veggie burgers labeled as veggie burgers here in the US. Not once have I been confused and thought it was hamburger meat rather than veggies. We even have labels that say what the ingredients are, and I have no trouble reading those labels.

Why stop them from being called veggie burgers? It really makes no sense to me, but maybe I’m missing something.

Nobody cares about the terms veggie burger and veggie sausage, it’s only the meat industry

I think the ban on the use of names like “sausages” for vegan food is completely stupid but I don’t get why we should care about Paul McCartney’s opinion on that.

Isn’t this just rampant capitalist protectionism going much beyond regional brands that have been taken over by popular usage? Like, “champagne” vs “sparkling wine”?

I think it’s pretty dumb myself but I also recognize the need for companies to protect their brand. (“I’ll Xerox this for you”, “yo hand me some Aspirin, gimme a Coke no not that I meant Sprite”).

I agree with McCartney, people are not actually that stupid (hmm ok well, enough people anyway), and no one thinks “burger” and “sausage” only means animal meat since both terms refer to a preparation/processing style.

Just like “milk” just means a suspension held in water. I’m pretty sure no one thinks glacial milk actually means human food. No one thinks that of milk of magnesia, etc.

  10. It makes sense. Same as with cheese. You should not be able to call something cheese, that does not contain cheese for the majority of its content.
I have no issues with it being called veggie patties or something else.

I mean, apart of how much sense this naming stuff actually makes, but the product is not banned, just the name of the product must change.

Chiming in from the US here, but I’ve never once seen brands put “veggie” or “oat” in small print to deceive a consumer. I’m sure it could happen but in practice the alternative/sustainable aspect of it actually helps marketing rather than hurt it.

I like the labeling “veggie burger” because it conveys how it is to be used- like a meat burger. Most people are not born vegetarian, so using meat/dairy based references is legitimately helpful.

I’m not implying that my experiences match with the EU experience, but just saying that there’s valid reasons people like doing this.

  13. There are so much more important things to fucking worry about in the world, why are they banning that??!!?
