It seems he’s been given a 6-month suspended sentence. The judge appeared from my perspective to insinuate Barton would be jailed before delivering the verdict he is not beyond rehabilitation.

I’m sure Barton got a fright.

  2. >Barton was given six months in custody, suspended for 18 months, for sending six “grossly offensive” social media posts

    >He was also made to do 200 hours of unpaid work in the community and pay more than £20,000 in costs

Couldn’t be happening to a nicer guy

Prison sentences for calling someone a bike nonce is dystopian. What a joke the Communications Act has become.

This country is a joke. We need a bit of a “sticks and stones” approach back, people are so easily offended. They’ll be complaining prisons are too overcrowded again and let all the famous nonces out.

No doubt he’s a gigantic bellend and the world would be a better place without him but it’s dystopian to convict someone for hurty words online. This kind of shit fuels the far right.

People who likes to be rude, cruel and malicious to others while hiding behind their screens are going to react poorly to this verdict I think….

Restrictions on speech, however unpleasant, shouldn’t be done via the legislation of “offensive” anything.

The number of people on here already who seem to think calling somebody a pedo isn’t a serious thing to do! Yes there should be consequences for calling somebody one of the worst things a person can be. No that isn’t “dystopian”. Also is “dystopian” the word of the day or something!?

Joey Barton is a massive cunt and I’d happily forget his entire existence, but what are we doing here prosecuting people for mean tweets. Chilling.

This should never be in a criminal court, and related directly to why Labour is going for the elimination of jury trial. The taxpayer court apparatus should not be used for rich idiots having twitter spats. Tort law exists for that, go spend hundreds of thousands over words in civil court.

I’d be fascinated to know what people who consider this “dystophian” would do if they were being smeared as a child molester.

Would you just consider it just “hurty words”?

Or would you want something done about it that sends a message that this isn’t acceptable behaviour?

Really hate this guy but one thing I hate more is this countries restrictive speech laws. You should be allowed the have banter and be “mean” online with it becoming a criminal matter

I think we have to remember that both individuals are in the public eye. They’re reputations are important for their livelihoods.

One calling another something that isn’t true should be dealt with severely.

Similar to when Elon Musk spouts nonsense about individuals.

When you have a large following and a large platform. You need to be responsible. There are a lot of folk out there that believe anything anyone tells them. Especially if they’re a fanatic of that person.

If the same happened in a work environment I would expect disciplinary measures to be carried out.

I think many of us are forgetting how to be decent.

I’ve no love for Vine at all. If I never hear his voice again it’ll be too soon. That said. Would I rather take a stand with him or Joey Barton. It would be Vine every time.

“Sentencing Barton on Monday, Judge Andrew Menary KC told the former England international “robust debate, satire, mockery and even crude language may fall within permissible free speech. But when posts deliberately target individuals with vilifying comparisons to serial killers or false insinuations of paedophilia, designed to humiliate and distress, they forfeit their protection.””

He never learns, he will be at it again tomorrow. The judge thinks there may be some’ prospect of rehabilitation. Do we drugs test judges?

  16. TOMMYxGUNN on

So we’re agreed it’s not ok to call someone a paedo, how about a Nazi? Because that word has been flying around a lot recently.

  17. ApplicationCreepy987 on

He needs a little spell in jail to knock this ongoing crap out of him

    Joey Barton
    What a wonderful human.

With no well documented history of doing utterly horrendous things or saying offensive things.

    Pure class. /s
