  2. The fact that companies act this way towards people who take maternity/paternity leave really shows how little these companies care about their employees. What’s the betting mothercare called her a member of the family before she went on leave?

    Throughout my whole career, whenever someone went on maternity leave, it was the younger, childless workers who picked up the extra workload, usually without extra pay or recognition. That reality is rarely acknowledged. We absolutely need people to have kids, and new parents should be supported, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of their colleagues’ time, wellbeing, or career progression.

    With fewer young people entering the workforce now, employers can’t rely on that unpaid “backup labour” anymore and this is the result.
