  1. Personally, I’m not against having digital ID’s. The problem is how the government will use digital IDs. For example, if they start mandating as mass surveillance tool, which is already proposed, then I hate it.

Lots of countries have a national ID scheme that works well, but in the UK it’ll just be outsourced to Palantir like everything else is

  3. But what’s wrong with Digital ID? I’m glad that I don’t have to carry a pile of documents, but can just have ID / driver’s license / vehicle registration certificate / insurance, etc. in an app on the phone.

  4. This-Hall-2168 on

Why is that bad? I am a dual-citzien, not from the UK. Both my countries have a digital ID app, I love them both.

Ok, let’s compromise and introduce Analogue ID cards to start with.. /s

  6. “The government policy is clear…”

“We ran on a mandate to do X…”

“We will continue with this initative…”

    etc.etc.etc.

This entire site is just a waste of time, nothing has ever CHANGED because of any of those petitions. Not once. Not even a little bit. What was always going to happen, happened anyway.

  7. What’s the problem with this honestly? What about the driving license and passport? Seems like such a big deal for something that exists in most countries in the world, sorry but get over it

For those of us who grew up in the belief that this was a land of liberty, it’s increasingly hard to recognise this country.

fake debate, all of europe has ID for many many decades and nothing happened. good luck with another fake debate that will win you nothing and keep you poor :))) the oligarchy is laughing hard at keeping the peasants “at war” with each other on fakes!

I’ve got no issues with digital ID, As long as the data is used correctly then you have nothing to fear,

  11. TheMysteriousOrganis on

Literally, every country in Europe has a digital signature.

  12. BudgetPhallus on

I mean we would probably face the same stuff in germany, if somebody were to introduce it. Freedom Boomer nimbys. Technically you don’t even need to have the ID be online 24/7. Tired of always carrying my wallet because of tax evaders that dont accept card, because of the absence of digital ID and license

Ninety percent of the UK population owns a passport, driving licence, or senior bus pass – all of which are government-issued photo IDs. Any new ID card should contain same (or less) information than a passport and would most likely be stored in the same database.

The whole idea of the UK becoming “Big Brother” is rather adorable.
The UK already has the most CCTV cameras in Europe, yet when footage is actually needed, the cameras often don’t seem to work, record, or get analysed or used as evidence. The government doesn’t even know how many people live in the country. When Brexit happended and they asked EU citizens to register they realised 2 million more people than expected. And this was just EU people.

Why should ID cards be any different when handled by same people? Or is UK getting also compentent government with these ID cards that will turn UK into Big Brother state??

Whats the proposed legislature? Here in Germany the IDs got some NFC chips since quite some time. 10 years ago you could decide if the NFC chip was activated and if you want to store your Fingerprints but dont have to. Today its mandatory. But to read out the NFC, you need some Password (6 Digit Numbers… not too strong). The NFC can only be talked to by a Government ID-App, and as far as I know the only feature is to ID yourself to online-services like Organtransplantation-Lists or similar. But its not like private entities could use this, like lets say demand from you to use the digital feature for ID.

You could always use some EMP and fry the NFC chip, which I did with my first ID. The ID is still valid as the law states the card itself is the ID not its digital content. The ID isnt your property so you are damaging gov. property but in a real world no one cares. Worst case would be you get caught with a defect ID and the police advise you to get a new one – thats it.

So, what is the actual debate here?

I can see many concerns, but if its similar to the german approach you can navigate around the NFC capabilites if you desire.

Can’t wait to see 10 mps turn up because the rest are off doing more lucrative side work

  16. Will Digital ID cover emigrant people with status uncertain, upholded until asylum request decided? That could be a good use, maybe?

  17. BuxtonWater1 on

The government implementing Digital ID which wasnt in their manifesto, removing the right to a jury trial, a history of ongoing privacy violations and mass surveiance, an ongoing war attempting to backdoor encryption, and protestors being arrested.

I wonder why I dont trust this government.

  18. As a European with a national id card and who lived in the UK for many many years – this petition is stupid.

  19. Confused_Drifter on

    “Commits to not introducing”

How about, “abandons its plans to introduce”

  20. Unhappy_Sugar_5091 on

Chat control, digital ID, and rising Reform party. This is a deadly dance and I feel sad for people in UK. Fallen empire is gonna cannibalize its own to feed itself.

I so resent this seemingly universal backlash to modernising our society in Europe.

From self-checkout to digital currencies that strengthen our purchasing power and reduce our reliance on American financial firms to digital IDs…..

We have the ability to live in a more prosperous and efficient society, but we flat-out reject it. Largely thanks to the Boomer generation which is the largest generation and they’ll vote against progress and for lower taxes AKA more money for themselves at the cost of the under-40 generations.

  22. These petions always get ignored, politicians never give a shit, just look how these fucks pushed through chat control

  23. Difficult-Fact1769 on

Won’t be much of a debate. It will be “digital ID” “illegal immigration” “we’ll go ahead”. Petitions are just there to give people a false sense of democracy. The best way to keep people prisoners is to let them think that they are free.

  24. Helpful-Juggernaut33 on

I really really wish petitions did anything. every single one that gets to parliament. “Hi were here to discuss this petition on a thing that we introduced that millions of people dont like, it will generate millions if not billions for my mate dave, All agreed to say “tough and get back in your boxes” to the peons say Aye, now off to the subsidised bar & restaurant, then home to our subsidised 2nd homes.

Nothing will happen, they will give it lip service as they have to, thats if any of them actually show up for the discussion. will be like 4 MP’s sand some indy back benchers.

It’s just a crutch to give the paying public the illusion of a voice. you dont, I dont, we dont, just shut up pay the money and dont ask questions

  26. MrAcerbic on

Are people forgetting that this is going to cost £1.2bn to £1.8bn for setup, including infrastructure and security, and around £100m annually for maintenance.

I guarantee you any other country with this scheme won’t be paying this.

  27. MrAcerbic on

It’s not that they’re introducing them. It’s the reason that they’re introducing them for and that it’s not going to solve that problem.

  28. Ambiverthero on

most people don’t understand what a digital
id card is. moreover they seem to be very happy with the amount of data american tech companies have on them. odd.

  29. People in the UK are irrationally afraid of ID cards.

They all hold driving licenses and provide the same exact information to the government for those and basically use them as ID cards. They just have the Department for Transport issue their IDs as “driving licence” rather than having the Home Department issue almost identical documents called “ID”.

I don’t drive and have to use a provisional driving licence as ID to avoid carrying a passport everywhere.

  30. Captain_Leemu on

Ill save you all the suspense.

    The reply will be

“The government has decided to implement this and will do so carefully with your concerns in mind”

  31. FootballUpset2529 on

I’d be less suspicious of this if they hadn’t taken such a heavy handed approach to the online safety act implementation – “We did something” seemed to be more important than “We did something well.” Plus the last few petitions I signed that got debated were updated with “We have debated this and we said we were going to do it so we’re going to do it so nyer.”.
