Hundreds of Porsche cars have stopped working in Russia due to an issue with a satellite-based security system, according to local reports.

Owners reported various issues with their vehicles, including not being able to start the engine, or it shutting down soon after ignition. Others said that they had been locked out of their cars.

The root cause of the issue is not yet known, though a representative for Russia’s largest dealership group told local media that it could be an act of sabotage.

“It’s possible this was done deliberately,” the Rolf spokesperson told the RBC news website, without providing any evidence.

There is no official support for Russian Porsche owners after the German manufacturer suspended commercial operations in the country following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

I expect other brands to follow this act of sabotage in Russia. Bravo to Porsche! ❤️

Don’t take this the wrong way, but this is one of the things I really hate about modern cars: Someone else is in control over your locks and ignition etc. If I pay for a car I want to own it, and I want my keys to be the only keys to the car, etc.

I am as much “fuck russia” as the next guy but fuck that shit of a brand being in control of when they want to disable my car or not.

Yes, but also no. We do not want this functionality built into cars or any other products that we own.
I would absolutely think twice before buying a Porsche:

From what I’ve heard about this, it wasn’t a deliberate block, it’s that the car relies on a service and if that service goes offline, the car stops working. This is even worse from a consumer point of view than if the manufacturer can just remotely disable the car.

Peak intelligence : spending a lot of money for a status symbol and not even being in charge of its use

Before you all get your panties in a bunch, cand you actually try to read the article?

“The problem impacts any model built after 2013 that is fitted with an anti-theft Vehicle Tracking System (VTS).

When there is a loss of satellite connectivity, the VTS interprets it as a potential theft attempt and immobilises the engine.”

AKA the system worked as it was intented.

  8. I think this is a power demonstration of the current US-Administration to show germany that even the “most german” products are vulnerable to US-Influence.

Don’t assume evil, where stupidity is the norm.

  13. Yes, it is well known that Russian authorities sabotage public Internet and time to time unpredictably break things that rely on it.
