“The era of America’s “security guarantee” for Europe is over” is a roundabout way of saying the US, by their own official policy, is now an enemy of Europe/considers europe an enemy in need of subjugation.
We need a real union. But will the pressure work in the right direction?

This of course means that the US forces will have to leave all European bases. Asap
How was this ever a thing, European nations not having strong militaries and counting on someone else to protect them? It was unfathomable to me growing up – that we, with our military history and fertile lands,
were under someone else’s security umbrella and importing food! It’s so weird and fucked an unnatural, especially when you’re counting on an alien people who can’t point you out on a map.
Well, I hope the declining states of America will one day realize they are going to deal with a superpower China alone.
China is already almost a superpower.
So what other countries besides Russia (and apparently the USA) does Europe need protection from?
Wasn’t this the point of the US document about Europe? That Europe shouldn’t rely too much on the US in terms of defense?
I guess we should thank Trump, because we Europeans wouldn’t want to spend on our own defense, but If it’s in name of owning Trump, then we all are happy to spend on defense.
Things rarely make sense these days but 80 years of soft power has greatly benefited the US. The US military industrial complex would not be the size it is if the US hadn’t been favored through soft power in each and every single defense procurement for at least 7 decades.
Throwing the soft power away like this is costly. No one is sitting around waiting to reestablish soft power with the US when the administration change. The consequences of what is happening right now will echo for several decades, the void will be filled by other players, mainly by Europe itself.
American products represented an entire geopolitical paradigm. Everything from software and services, military equipment, security frameworks to chocolate bars and soft drinks. The sale of this “merchandize” enriched America.
Isolationism is relatively easy to do, but reconquering the hearts of Europeans will require more than making Top Gun 3 and time is running out because the void is reluctantly but firmly and perpetually being filled with European military power.
It is understandable if it was unsustainable for the US, but the price of leaving might be equally as unsustainable.
The European Military Complex is about make a hard entry that won’t disappear in this century.
This is absolutely the right thing. We can’t be expected to foot the bill for European defense forever. If Europeans want Ukraine defended from Russia, they should be the ones to do it, not America. In fact, ideally peace talks in Ukraine end with the US withdrawing all military support so that Europeans can fill the gap.
