  1. You can be sure the Irish Times didn’t happen to stumble across this, someone tipped them off. I’d guess there’s a lot of shenanigans going on the background both before and after, and intelligence people from both sides of the conflict were keeping an eye on Zelensky. It seems like a completely embarrasing mess which could have led to global outrage if anything happened to the plane, and the government have been warned for a long time that we were underinvesting in defence capabilities.

It also captured the positions of two other “dark ships” that did not have their transponders switched on. These were two Irish Naval Service vessels: LÉ William Butler Yeats, whose crew first spotted the drones five hours later, and LÉ Aoibhinn.

So the good news is we have two ships in service now.

i heavy doubt it , this now just mass hysteria from the irish times

  4. I’d imagine the US military knew exactly what that vessel was, where it came from, and who was responsible for it. Now, whether they are sharing that intelligence with other NATO members is another story. With the current administration, it seems they are content with allowing Moscow to do as it pleases in Europe without any real consequences. The days of having the Americans as a deterrent to aggression are probably over, at least for the foreseeable. But it’s probably no harm ensuring Europe starts to stand on its own two feet in terms of military capabilities, the over reliance on the US was always a risk in and of itself.

Would love to go back to the days when we were a neutral country, we can’t be both neutral and pick a side in a fight, politicians here can’t resist grandstanding and in some cases that can have severe consequences.

The Belgian defence minister came out last week and said that instead of calling them ‘drones’ they will now refer to whats being sighted over their military assets for the last few months as ‘Aerial Phenomenon’. Oh, and the new term for ufo happens to be uap meaning unidentified aerial phenomenon. So think about that for a minute.

Why do they keep calling them drones? Are these the same drones that brought shutdowns across multiple European airports recently? The same drones that they cant keep track of, no photos and anti drone weapons are not working. Hmmmmm 🛸

If someone attempted to kill a foreign official visiting our country, which these drones may very well have been trying to do, then having the capability to resist that attempt would be entirely in keeping with Ireland’s status as a neutral country. We don’t need to join NATO, or divert all the money from X, Y, or Z thing you agree with to do it, either. The defence forces are underfunded, our capabilities are sorely lacking, and increased spending in this area would help protect our neutrality, not undermine it.

And a gentle reminder that we should also build some houses. Allowing the kind of discontent to foment that the housing crisis has caused is also a potential security risk, as both the Americans and Russians are more than willing to interfere in our affairs and take advantage of that. Unfortunately for me, I don’t think my platform of ‘guns and houses’ is likely to get me elected 😉

A whole lot of articles being published to try and convince people to spend on military when we have real infrastructure problems that need attention.

It’s actually insane that they’re using sentinel data and not actively using Planet Labs Maritime Domain Awareness for active monitoring.
