Honestly, reading about the new €1.7bn defence investment plan, I just hope it was put together by people with real expertise and that the minister simply signed off on solid, evidence based recommendations rather than steering it for political reasons. A plan of that scale especially one aimed at long term capability and security really needs to be driven by professionals who understand the actual needs of Defence Forces operations, not short term headlines.

If Pfizer want €1.7bn given to Israel’s projects, Pfizer should pay for it.

This will still have us spending the least amount on defense per capita in Europe. (GDP is a nonsense number in Ireland).
We’re security freeloaders.

Who is letting her be in charge of that amount of money. Could not even get the streets safe domestic security wise.

Is what what she’s spending on Garda escorts while she does the big shop?

So is this an extra €1.7bn on top of current defence spending or a total between now and 2030. Because that’s only about €350m per year. Which would just about keep up with inflation but not allow the purchase and maintenance of any new hardware. Or even paying better wages for current personnel.

We bought 35 Javelin FGM 148s and 44 Missiles, i am sure this 1.7bn will be spent just as well.

As much as allocating the money is great, can we also allocate the time for a strategy for these forces. Population and economy wise we are comparable to Finland, and it’s pretty clear what’s the Finnish armies main purpose. Having an outlined vision I’m sure would help with recruitment approaches, procurement, etc

How does this align with the findings of the Report of the Commission on the Defence Forces? Seems very low.

But this is Fine Gael we’re talking about. Is there not some kind of mysterious market force that can magically fix our defence forces?

Not much hope with that absolute muppet in power. Just moving her around to different positions to cover up the incompetence. This country really is run by idiots and it shows in so many ways.

I genuinely think there’s an opportunity here for Ireland to become a centre for defensive drone weaponry and counteracting research.
We have no hope of ever defending ourselves against major attacks but the chances of us ever facing one are relatively remote. However we do face the threat of hybrid attacks from undeclared enemies such as our close call last week against Zelenskyy.
All these data centres could be protected with drones, we could impose a tax on them to pay for the cost of it and use that income to research better ways to spot and neutralise threats against our infrastructure (should we ever get any in large numbers – and I mean infrastructure as much as the threats 😄)
Maybe see what we could do at see with underwater patrol drones – we could have the equivalent of an air force and navy using drones to address the actual real-world threats an island off the western edge of Europe actually faces. We aren’t about to be invaded by Russia but they’re going to get more interested in having a go at underwater cables and other infrastructure from a distance and we should be able to meet that threat ourselves.

€1.7bn for defence.
For the love of God no one tell BAM or we’ll end up spending it all on an Irish “National Iron Dome” that ends up costing €120bn and only protects part of Inner City Dublin on sunny days when there is no wind and the incoming missiles circle for a while before impact.
