    > Officers from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and the Metropolitan police found the bushmeat at a site in Deptford, south east London on December 5.

    > A 57-year-old man was arrested and released under investigation, the FSA said.

Unfortunately they don’t mention the amount that they found.

Has taken them bloody decades to do this.

Bushmeat has been coming into the country for decades and SFA has been done about it.

Local news in various cities around the country where there are long haul flights landing have had conversations with baggage handlers where the meat has come out of the packaging, there is blood leaking out of luggage or there are maggots.

I feel slightly ashamed that I put “what does porcupine taste like?” Into Google

    >>Porcupine meat tastes similar to a mix of fatty pork and poultry (like turkey), often described as rich, sweet, and succulent, but it’s very dependent on the animal’s diet, with pine-browsing porcupines potentially tasting “off” or gamey; it’s fatty, sometimes chewy, and benefits from slow cooking or stewing to tenderize it.

I’m really puzzled why media keep calling it “bushmeat”. Like I know it’s a direct translation, but the common use English word for it is “venison”.

I totally get the very real safety concerns and everything, and of course unsafe food should be sanctioned, it’s just the reporting of it is weird. Cane rat is quite common as a food item in some places in Africa. As is ostrich, crocodile, springbok, kudu, porcupine, flying ants… And some of these are sold in UK butcheries and supermarkets as luxury goods.
