TheUS wants Ukraine to withdraw its troops from the Donbas region, and Washington would then create a “free economic zone” in the parts Kyiv currently controls, [Volodymyr Zelenskyy](https://www.theguardian.com/world/volodymyr-zelenskiy) has said.
Previously, the US [had suggested Kyiv should hand over](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/nov/20/us-russia-reportedly-draft-plan-end-ukraine-war-zelenskyy) the parts of Donbas it still controlled to Russia, but the Ukrainian president said on Thursday that Washington had now suggested a compromise version in which Ukrainian troops would withdraw, but Russian troops would not advance into the territory.
“Who will govern this territory, which they are calling a ‘free economic zone’ or a ‘demilitarised zone’ – they don’t know,” said the Ukrainian president, speaking with journalists in Kyiv on Thursday.
Zelenskyy said [Ukraine](https://www.theguardian.com/world/ukraine) did not believe the plan was fair without guarantees that Russian troops would not simply take over the zone after a Ukrainian withdrawal.
This reeks of a trick to get Ukraine to withdraw and the Russia rush in. Then Trump shrugs he shoulders and calls them stupid and losers.
Seems like Ukrainians get it, which makes me think the US team thinks they are very smart but everyone can see they’re pretty much idiots.
The Trump’s US wants the Donbas to themselves that’s what they want. Free economic zone doesn’t mean what we think.

Something like this is ripe for exploitation, corruption, and Russian subversion.
Russia has already included the donbas oblast into their country and already occupy most of it. It doesn’t matter what Ukraine or the US want, its Russia now and Ukraine doesn’t have the ability to take it back.

What’s the interpretation of the word free in combination with economic zone here? The same as words like free and speech or truth and social are being interpreted nowadays?
Given Trump works for Putin, this is just setting up a land grab. Russia must be getting desperate if their puppet is already back to pressuring Ukraine, after giving up on getting a peace deal last month.
How about US withdraws from present day California, New Mexico, and other southwestern states ?

Think Russia should withdraw instead
The Donbas line contains key Ukrainian fortifications that Russia has been unable to breach for 11 years. Breaking them opens a direct path to Kyiv.
This is why Putin is so keen on this region.
By forcing Ukraine into such concessions, the US is essentially siding with Russia and guaranteeing another war in just a few years.
But… Why? It’s their territory and moskals couldn’t capture it so why should they lose it?

How on earth is that supposed to work. Russia’s been kicking up all this fuss about Ukraine joining NATO, and now anyone thinks a US-controlled region on Russia’s border is going to work?
Basically when people were yelling on interwebs, that Trump wants to join Russia in stealing from Ukraine, they were absolutely correct.
