So the assets are frozen, so its status quo. No change and Ukraine still needs a cash injection to not collapse in the next few months. Am I correct understanding that EU will need to either take money out of its budget or less likely take on joint debt which probably won’t be repaid if we are being honest with ourselves in order to finance Ukraine. Neither possibility seems great.

There are going to be hard times for the EU. EU populations are already feeling strained with increasing costs of living, increasing taxes and worsening public services, no one will be happy financing foreign nations. Money for defense will be harder to come by as well. Russia and USA will likely turn the crews on Europe in 2026.

This is a major geopolitical move by the EU. Freezing €210 billion in Russian assets sends a strong signal about accountability and economic pressure, but it also raises questions about long-term implications for global trade and diplomacy. It will be interesting to see how Russia responds and whether this escalates tensions further.

    >On Wednesday, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever cast doubt over the suitability of Article 122 and the existence of an economic emergency to justify its activation.

I can understand Belgium’s reticence to give the funds away to Ukraine without guarantees and a mutualisation of the risks, but not the issue with blocking the funds. There’s absolutely no reason to not freeze them.

I guess the first step is done, now find a legal framework to confiscate them. There’s no doubt that Russia is an hybrid war with us, of their own volition. They have have confiscated EU assets in Russia, so maybe start matching what was taken in dubious legal proceedings. Then find a legal way of taking the rest, mutualise the risks, and give it to Ukraine. I have no doubt they will be reinvesting a fair bit pretty immediately in European defence companies anyway. In any case, they will put to good use, and a weaker Russia’s good for all of us.

Oh god, what a move. 3 years of war and we have such a great development? Laughable.

Maybe 5 more years and we could make use of those money. But if in future EU actually gives us those money, please, could you also send some auditor company with it that will observe all the spending of those money? Don’t want it to be wasted by guys like Mindich.
