we need to consume less slop. and this includes cheap chinese trumpery. Taxes/fees are one way to steer consumption habits.

Perhaps people wold not use these Chinese stores if local/regional stores and resellers din’t try to massively profit off this.
For example zip ties in construction store pack of 100 – 1.62€. Temu x500 2.03€. ~500%
The companies order in mass from china – the stores are full of it. And mark up or rebrand.
Temu etc allowed people to bypass the middlemen.
Perhaps require stores to sell at least 50% non Asia origin goods, else increase their tax rates.
Krjstoff on
Just outlaw Temu, Shien and all those other insane consumerist chinese sweatshops already.

We gonna get same slop for 10x the price now. Alot of “slop sellers” are very happy with this news.

They know the actual reform won’t be done by 2028 which is why they created this quick cashgrab “solution” that will stay in place indefinitely as they fail to make progress towards the reform for decades.

This is such bullshit and anti consumer. China bad china bad, meanwhile we buy shit from there because is fucking cheaper and is the only thing we can afford! Not to say the most stores sells the same shit under different package at a higher price.
Then we go and wonder why the fuck do people get into extremist when you get out their affordability and everything.
I buy shit from China, especially plushy toys. They’re 10x cheaper than what we find in stores in my country or EU stores. SO FUCK ME I GUESS

It’s a good thing. More items will be send in bulk now, making it easier for customs to check the quality. It’s easier to check jewelry for lead when there’re 1000 pieces in one container, compared to 1 piece in a 1000 packages each.

Well, I struggle to make end meat as it is. Guess I’ll have to cut back even more. Fucking EU. Do something about these profit maximisers, because this will make that issue worse.

Honestly, fuck this. Sellers here just buy the same stuff from Temu and AliExpress and sell it at 5x the price. And there are a lot of electronic parts I just can’t find here, this is just another tax that low income citizens will have to shove up their ass.

Isn’t it a bit strange to have the charger per item instead of per package? So you can order 20 different items in the same order and pay 3€ for each or you can make 20 different orders and still pay 3€ surcharge per order. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have it per package if the issue is the quality of small packages? Obviously this has nothing to do with the amount of shipments, but it’s funny that they want to frame it like that.
TianZiGaming on
>The deal effectively ends the tax-free status for packages worth less than €150.
>The flat tax will apply for each different type of item in a package. If one package contains 10 plushy toys, the duty is applied once. But if the shipment also contains a charging cable, another €3 is added.
That’s just greedy. Can’t even combine different items in the same package to avoid stacking the fee…

Targeting people for minimum spending and demanding that these small purchases are made at local establishments when they go from small to medium purchases is such a disgusting spit in the face of the average consumer.
Nobody is excited to buy off Temu and the like, but when you find something for 90 second instead of 11 euro, you’re going to wait a week for the shipping to get here.
Ackaunt on
Going to get down voted to hell for saying this but having actually worked in ecommerce and having talked directly to the logistics people, Temu & co. are only able to ship this cheaply (and Temu only ships by plane, the most expensive option!) because they do not declare many packages or “underestimate” the values of their contents to fall below the customs threshold.
Honest companies will never be able to compete with this and no, not all of them have such huge margins, those mainly apply to Amazon dropshipping trash

What’s the reason behind that? Are they trying to penalize the online shops in favor of the real ones that are closing more and more?

Funny thing is that even with the new rules, it’s still cheaper to buy stuff from temu.

Buy from temu for $5+tax, or buy literally the exact same product from Amazon for $30+shipping. Hmm. Choices, choices.

Again as with the environmental stuff, and the russian gas stuff, only the end consumer is fucked.
Can’t these taxes be made proportionate-percentile of someone’s income+wealth?
Only the poor will get hurt of this…(never bought Temu products personally)

Hot take: 3€ won’t change anything. I usually group items into a single order to try to maximize coupons and discounts. So, whether my order costs 47€ or 50€ won’t make a big difference to me.
What I’d like to know is where will this money go? I wouldn’t mind paying 10€ per order if the money went for something that would make Europe more resilient and less reliant on imports in anything important or strategic (defense, tech, etc).
Belophan on
On packages up to 150 Euro, so just use 151 Euro at Temu…
I have spent more than that across all my packages this year.
