It’s almost like an American tech company doesn’t care one bit about its users wellbeing as much as its viewers don’t question the slop they consume because it tickles their prejudices.

YouTube is a publisher and should be regulated accordingly. It’s time to remove the figleaf of it being just a platform. And some media training for the whole of the UK wouldn’t go amiss either.

It is not difficult to see why more and more Governments are starting to implement restrictions on Social Media Site.

Take Australia’s ban on Facebook for teenagers. Whilst I hate censorship it is difficult to argue that attempts to limits teenagers exposure of Platforms that actively support the worst kind of people, do the absolute minimum when it comes to stopping predators is not a good thing.

Probably because they’re doing a shit job and have the worst approval rating in history.

    Not everything is a conspiracy.

Didn’t they announce they were relaxing their moderation rules earlier this year?

It’s not that any of them care about “free speech” they know that rage/click bait, conspiracy and fake **** is popular and generates income, same with twitter, facebook etc.

Truth is there is so much incentive from outside entities to campaign against Labour

Russia? Wants Labour gone for a Russian sympathic party or a useful idiot

Gambling companies? Want Labour gone to reduce their tax (have you seen stake spamming memes on social media with their logo?)

American nationalists? Want Labour gone to have a leader that will do what they want

We hail democracy as the golden standard we must maintain but how can it function with so many votes being influenced by lies.

Why all the alarm? The BBC has been talking out both sides of its mouth and covering up criminalities for decades.

Someone else tells a pork pie and there is all of this? 🤔

Hardly a shock. A swamp of bots and sock-puppet accounts, paired with shrugging oversight and zero transparency, is catnip for despots of every stripe to unleash their bot / troll hoards – and for every bored nihilist or grievance-hoarding anachronism with too much time and a taste for wreckage. A grimly perfect metaphorical devils playground for mischief, masquerading as “debate.”

Quite the wheeze, really. Musk and Trump railing against the EU for daring to attempt to erect a few flimsy barricades against misinformation and marauding bot hordes, while the aforementioned pair (in the estimations of a number of observers) seem oddly misty-eyed and deferential toward regimes that don’t merely curb free speech – they crush it.

These are places where pointing out an inconvenient truth doesn’t get you fact-checked or throttled by an algorithm, but arrested, detained, or quietly removed from circulation. Free speech absolutism, it seems, works best when it’s safely theoretical and never aimed at the certain (dodgy) powerful targets..
