What if one day you have a government in power who supports things you don’t agree with, and they decide to ban things you support or find to be truthful.
They shouldn’t have an ounce more power. It’s the parents responsibility and to an extent the companies who provide the service if an account is listed as a minor.

It’s a waste of time but an exercise you can play on Meta platforms is to see how quickly you can change the main feed scroll from how it looks typically when you open it to something which contains very little of that material. So basically get from Father Ted classic quotes to bad drivers or whatever 👀 Meta algorithms are particularly responsive to manipulaion in my experience.

If Australia has shown us anything it’s that the $101million effort to ban under 16’s from social media lasted around 45 minutes before 90-95% of kids were back on social media. The kids even made backups on unvetted, shady, lesser-known social media before the ban came into effect. The only thing banning under 16’s from social media will do is drive the children into dangerous, unregulated, unmonitored, underground social media apps that have no safeguards in place and putting them in considerably greater risk.

I think they should be banned outright. Mostly for adults sake, not for kids.

Plenty of people like to impose their non toxic ideologies on anyone who disagrees with them and therefore have toxic ideologies. Life is simple when you are convinced you are perfect.

I agree with this completely. We regulate newspapers, enforce journalistic standards, insist on balanced reporting. But then we allow people to consume hours of content that is often hateful, untrue, and for some reason seems to be encouraged on X, Facebook, and to a lesser extent Tiktok.

Recommender systems are a neutral and useful tool that’s open to abuse/manipulation. Why not try putting safeguards on them first instead of banning them? We’ve an obsession of trying to ban innovate technology at times

There needs to be laws that prevent private companies from profiting from user data. If they had to pay royalties for selling individuals data, it would undercut the entire business model.

I’ve watched some eye opening videos lately from ethical hackers showing the sort of things going on from roblox and its scary but they show that people find ways around things like the safety features. I think bans and stuff would work to some extent but not fully and that maybe adults need to learn more about what to watch for and Internet safety for their kids so they can be more pro active as a parent

Ban targeted advertising and the business models of FB and Google fall asunder.

You know your opinions are wrong when you have to ban the other side.

We can’t, there’s no means to track them.
Banning social media is itself a half measure. Any age protection measures would be overcome by VPNs and you can’t ban them for a number of different reasons.
Banning access to internet accessible smartphones would be easier to accomplish.

Ban it all. Fuck this nonsense.
These outlets are totally free unlike newspapers or TV, they’re selling content, advertising, promoting political and terror agenda and all under the guise of freedom of speech. It’s a load of shite,
The world was better without it, it can be again. Fuck them, I say.

Who decides what is toxic.
