I was ready to come on here and make jokes about how France should keep the self-immolation to itself and not force the rest of the EU into it but:

    >requiring the same production standards faced by EU farmers and establishing “import controls”

how is this not common sense? France W. How would it be fair competition if our farmers are playing the game with their hands tied behind their backs?

Another right wing propaganda narrative successfully spread through US-owned social media

Time for EU to show it can stand up against also its more powerful members. The fact a few farmers in France can keep a continent on hold for so much time is insane.

We will never progress if we keep acting as 27 self interested states.

Do European products even stand a chance against Chinese? For example I see not how EU produced EVs can compete with Chinese EVs.

At a time where every country is being more protective of their own markets the EU goes the other way and is learning nothing, ready to be submerged with agricultural products from South America while hoping to sell a few cars. I just finished watching how China is going to conquer Europe with electric cars, sure the cars will be made in Eastern Europe but 60% Chinese parts. Bye bye German manufacturers.

It’s not an easy topic tbh.

I understand the geopolitical needs. The need to access resources like Lithium for electric cars for exports. Probably extremely important to Germany.

But the risks are real, even if it looked good on GDP.

We’d be torpedo’ing a critical area for our strategic autonomy. Beef, poultry, soy (to feed cattle) is much, much cheaper in Brazil. Their farmers can use pesticides and methods that are banned here.

And it doesn’t mean it will be visible on the shelf. There is a massive difference between the final product and the process.

Furthermore very few containers are checked. We have no way to enforce that hormone treated beef does not end up on our shelves (see DG SANTE audits). In 2024 and 2025 beef was found with Estradiol so it’s certainly not airtight.

Mirror clauses are a good solution: if the farmer doesn’t respect eu legislation for the production process then the meat isn’t exported to the EU.

Given the political climate, any treaty without mirror clauses will not pass the assembly.

And we’re not even considering the fact that this would be rewarding or encouraging further the destruction of the Amazon forest.
