Il Brasile ha minacciato di ritirarsi dall’accordo di libero scambio euro-sudamericano Mercosur se non verrà firmato questo mese. Italia e Francia continuano ad avere riserve e mettono in guardia contro una conclusione tempestiva.

>Brazilian President Lula da Silva stated at a cabinet meeting in Brasilia that many concessions had been made to the EU. If the other side did not sign now, tougher measures would be taken.
Within the EU, France and Italy in particular are resisting a quick conclusion; both countries are demanding better protection for their agricultural economies. French President Macron warned against approval against his country’s will. This would be met with strong opposition. Germany, other states, and the EU Commission, on the other hand, are pushing for the agreement to be signed. This is currently scheduled for the end of this week.
A decision could be made at tomorrow’s EU summit in Brussels. In addition to the EU and Brazil, the free trade agreement also includes Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The EU Commission expects this to increase exports to the Mercosur countries by nearly 40 percent.

French farmers are throwing Brazil and Argentina into Chinese arms.. wasting a unique opportunity for European companies and more strategically, a long overdue need to increase ties with a culturally close region to us. We’re living difficult times and making it more difficult for nothing, to end up paying more taxes to subsidize these farmers… jeez.. what a self defeating stupidity.
For the love of whoever the hell you worship, this shit has been going on for TWENTY FIVE BLOODY YEARS!!!!!
It is a deal where Europe offer to buy SA commodities, so they will in turn buy our highly value-added industrial goods. Its as good of a trade deal as it is ever going to get. ESPECIALLY NOW when revitalization of European heavy industry is more important than ever.
You cant “diversify” from China or US or whatever if you just refuse to trade with anyone.
Understandable.
Let’s be honest, if after 25 years we can’t manage to finalise this important (now more than ever) trade agreement, we can only come to the conclusion that Europe is a shitshow that can’t be taken seriously.
Macron and others loudly proclaim that they want to finally make Europe more independent from the US and China, only to then sabotage everything we need to do to achieve this.
I just hope Macron and France finally shut up about their oh-so-important “European independence” when the agreement falls apart, because then no one could take them seriously anymore.
Maybe we just focus on agriculture then and leave all the other economic stuff to the big players.
After 25 years of negotiation, about fucking time.
We all know what is going to happen. The deal is going to be delayed. Years in the future, France will come up with new absurd demands and the deal will be delayed again.
With the current demands this trade deal is basically LATAM open its markets to services and industrial goods from Europe because competition is good, but we don’t open our markets to your agri goods because this type of competition is bad.
Fuck off. Better let this deal die and pivot to Asia already. Lula is right.
Quick reminder that Brazil is part of BRICS and refused to support Ukraine. If they want to walk then they can walk. Good riddance.
I don’t want to hear another word from France or Italy about European (or French/Italian) industry, or how US and Chinese companies are outpacing them, or spend a single Euro to support unholy the merger that is Stellantis, when they keep pulling shit like this.
Funny how people doesn’t care anymore about food safety when there is a opportunity to sell irrelevant cars somewhere..
We talk about sovereignty but we are ready to submits a vital and strategical sector (food production and supply, fcs!), at the dawn of a potential war, to international supplies oversea? Yeah, good calculation, genius.
How could farmers have such a strong lobby I never got this really. It employs a very low amount of people and only constitutes a negligible percentage of overall GDP.
If one side is so desperate to put deadlines on it the maybe the other side has damn good reason to have reservations. Deals under artificial time-pressure are usually a bad idea.
It’s a simple question here : when we sign a deal with Brazil, does it include a part on sustainable solutions on Amazon forrest ?
He has no leverage.
Well, thank you for your help in torpedoing the trade agreement.
People need to learn that Europe is going to allow Mercosur Sell food that does not meet the standards because otherwise this deal would be pointless for them. Their food is shitty and thwy use fertilizers that are illegal in europe
Good let that horrible deal die. If it they couldn’t agree for 25 years I’m not sure our very strong eu leaders are the best to push it through now. Maybe we will pay them 20% extra just because von der Leyen felt like it.
Always the fucking farmers. They don’t want green regulations, then they cry about climate change making it harder to sell their produce. They block every trade deal -> then they cry because still no one wants to buy their produce.
Brazil will food Europe with cheap coffee and bananas, our farmers won’t be able to sell theirs :(. /s
Would the India and Indonesia FTAs be enough to prevent the EU from falling into irrelevancy if this one fails?
It looks like EU will never successfully make a trade deal with any major country or bloc, because at the end of the day it can’t prioritize on anything, and as a consequence in every single big trade deal everyone has to be big winners, no small winners or losers are allowed.
Europe lost the free trade agreement with the US now it’s about to lose one with South America…
Guess I will continue paying 20 euro per kilo of beef
At some point EU needs to decide if it wants to be a high income high value added powerhouse OR it wants to be a low income low value added.
Honestly I think it’s over. This deal just isn’t happening.
All that work to gain more independence from US and China for nothing.
I love how people on Reddit comments are so detached from business realities, that they can’t see how farmers are unhappy if the government puts thousands and thousands of rules on their production with high taxes, while agreeing to free trade with south america. You guys are nuts, really, we don’t deserve to have these businesses in Europe with such low common sense. Netherlands for example has some of the most innovative agriculture in the world. Italy’s agriculture is pure tradition. How do you not see, that a free trade deal would be like poison for these businesses? They are only competitive as luxury goods outside Europe.
I hate French farmers with a passion
EU: We need to diversify our trade deals.
Mercosur: Hi!
EU: Not like that.
