Translation: UK to send more taxpayer’s money to America

Good. A.I. is changing the world extremely quickly. We need to be prepared.

Oh fuck, not more AI! This is just more money going to American techbros!

For god sakes, they need to keep a distant from AI. There is a huge bubble in that sphere and if we’re knee-deep in it, it’ll be worse than the 2008 crash.

Can someone explain to me why taxpayers are funding a technology that’s designed to make them redundant.

Overall I’m happy with this. The UK houses many indie video game studios, particularly in the mobile gaming world, and I’d really like to see us become more of a key player as it pertains to some of the more specialist/niche AI work happening across the globe.
My main concerns are around the companies that may get the grants themselves. I’m sure it’s not just an issue in tech/adjacent companies, but offshoring of technical roles is *rife* at the moment.
It’s really not uncommon to have a product manager, maybe a few seniors devs/engineers and a CTO based in London or Manchester and everyone else based overseas in India or Eastern Europe.
It’s also not uncommon for tech companies to reduce their workforces 10-25% almost quarterly via settlements, as opposed to proper redundancies.
I would hate for a UK based company to receive funding, only to turn around and have most of the higher paid and technical roles based overseas as it’s cheaper.
I really hope the money comes with stipulations as to what % of staff, particularly the technical roles, are based in the UK. Preferably with UK citizens/ILR.
It’s all good investing in companies, but companies have a distinct lack of investment in people and it only hurts us in the long term.
And this isn’t to say that less technical roles should be offshored instead. It’s more that we want to grow our technical expertise amongst our population and that needs extra protection whereas the non technical roles have more of a critical mass already.

Gaming is one of our strong suits so hopefully this helps

So, less money for engineering, science, business, social sciences? The arts are already criminally underfunded, so they can hardly get less.
Don’t get me wrong, AI is quite amazing. Especially once you look beyond generative Ai. But it is not the solution to all problems, and you still need to understand the application domain. Too much of the AI research is happening in a weird vacuum or in ignorance of the application.
