So many charities going financially bankrupt because of energy firms that are morally bankrupt.

They do this all the time, whenever someone doesn’t have a mains supply for any reason they just play pretend one is there and try to charge you for usage you can’t physically have taken.

Imagine if other companies tried this? “Well we know there’s no way you could have used our services as you take nothing from us, but we’d like to charge you anyway”.

    > It affects what we can purchase and how we can continue to grow.

… Why would this be? They haven’t paid the invoice, rightly so, and they won’t do either… So it has no impact on their finances?

I own a small business. The utility provider mixed up the gas and electricity readings and took £40k for one months supply of gas when it was normally a standing charge of a little over £100pcm. We didn’t use the gas there at all as it was only connected to a massive industrial heater that we didn’t need.

It took us a year to get the money back. The regulator ruled in our favour, but we still didn’t get the money back. In the end, the only thing that sorted it was a claim under the direct debit guarantee.

    Horrendously stressful.

I had my gas supply capped at the meter during the landlords anual safety check after my central heating boiler broke.

(It needed a £50 part and the L.A. landlord wanted to pull out the old system, pulling my home apart to do it), and install a massive water tank. I refused that service)

I was on a standing charge free duel fuel tariff at the time but when that expired despite assurances British Gas charged me standing charge on the gas supply because I had a meter. This is the situation this charity is in. If you have a meter you pay standing charge.

A friendly Redittor wrote that Octopus would remove it for free. And they do! I signed up for Octopus making the free removal of the meter with two weeks a condition of the switch.

The meter was removed and I never have to pay standing charge on Gas ever again. (I now have an all-electric smart home) Last month the supply was checked by Cadent Gas which is a legal requirement and Octopus charged me standing charge for the two weeks the meter was in place after the switch. (Bastards!)

How the charity let this roll on for so long with getting advice (from a friendly Redditor or other person) I don’t know.
