the 1s and 2s are the numbers of digits in each successive number.

i.e. the first word is 8-5-12-12-15, where each number represents a letter.

you already have 8=A, 5= B. You have to work out the others

edit: actually it looks like 8=A, 5=B is a red herring (or your own error?), it’s just 1=A, 2=B.

Bigger one is just the letters of the alphabet

    Eg 85121215 is hello

On the big piece of paper, it looks like it is just using the number of the letter in the alphabet. 1=A, 2=B, etc.

For example after the exclamation mark you have

    15-8, 2-25 20-8-5 23-1-25

Which is “Oh, by the way”.

Dunno what the second piece is for, maybe a red herring.

Did he give you 8 = A and 5 = B or is that your writing?

The second piece of paper helps parse the numbers. 11222 for example tells you that the first digit is a 1 digit number, so 8 is h. The third, forth and fifth digits are two digit numbers, so you have, 8th letter, 5th letter, 12th, 12th, 15th (of the alphabet) meaning hello.

So it will tell you if the number is single digit or double digit.

Why try and fool him? Tell him you’re proud of him for using a code that you can’t solve.

This is an alphabet substitution cipher (A=1, B=2, and so on). The small piece of paper details whether to interpret the digits in the ciphertext one or two at a time.

It’s an ambiguous code (perhaps by design, clever lad with the second sheet). Is 12 the letter L or is it AB? Ask him how he could make it unambiguous without the second sheet

It’s a letter replacement. 1=A, 2=B but there are 26 letters in the alphabet so each character can be 1 or 2 digits making each word ambiguous.

The second piece says if a character is 1 or 2 digits so the first word is 8, 5, 12, 12, 15 [1,1,2,2,2] if you replace each number with the letter in the alphabet you get the word “hello”.

Repeat for all words to get your son’s message.

    Hey.

If you’re reading this, it means you have cracked the code.

The message is here, the way the numbers work is simple.

The message is not meant to hide meaning, only to slow you down.

If you are reading this, you are curious, intelligent, and paying attention.

Most people will scroll past without effort. You didn’t.

    Curiosity is power.

Lock his christmas presents in a combinaton lock and gove similar clues to the code!

  12. Ask him to teach you! I bet it’ll mean the world to him and you get quality bonding time.
