I thought the games were struggling for relevancy. I really doubt putting them behind a paywall will help.

Great way to attract viewers put it behind a pay wall they did the same with snooker thankfully it was only the UK and Ireland Eurosport is still available in the rest of Europe.

TNT is really taking everything not nailed down by Sky at this point, free to watch sport is on its way out (obviously don’t agree right move)

Pretty much guarantees long-term irrelevance of the Commonwealth Games. Very short-sighted decision by the organisers to seek money today over meaningful relevance tomorrow.

Not that I had much interest but, yeah, thats me out. I’m on Freesat and, without checking, I don’t think I can get it there. Streaming? Do you just get the app on the TV? As a “casual” I doubt I’ll bother with the extra steps.
If its going to cost money, then surely, that does away with casual viewers?

Another soft power institution killed because the institutions don’t understand anything beyond immediate cost. Fantastic

Replacing Champions League with commonwealth games…. better keep my subscription after all.

The Games have been struggling big time in recent years and can barely find a host city who actually wants to host it. This is probably another nail in the coffin by putting it behind a paywall.

Australia binned the games because they realised it’s a massive expenditure for an event nobody is that bothered about. This will further hurt the Commonwealth Games as who’s gonna watch it now?

You can imagine the board meeting:
“How to we inspire future generations, so we can continue with these games.”
“Put it behind a paywall, where most of them won’t see it.”
“Genius.”

TNT are going to lose a lot of money on this and the Commonwealth Games will become more irrelevant.
I wouldn’t be all that surprised if the BBC are quite happy to see the back of it. It’s a shame for the athletes that will struggle that bit more to raise their profile between Olympics.

From the article:
>The broadcaster said every event would be streamed on HBO Max, which is due to launch in the UK and Ireland in March.
Warner Bros must have the most confusing streaming offering in existence, instead of just offering this to lower tier Discovery+ subscribers they are trying to promote a third platform not even launched yet and using a brand which is not known for sport.
No wonder the Netflix takeover is so attractive to their Board, they didn’t know which way they are facing at any one time.

Bizarre decision given the general apathy surrounding the games. Will the participants appreciate being firewalled?

The more the BBC lose, the more you have to say they are not value for money with the license fee.
I gave up after they lost the majority of the Olympics.

Obviously it sucks its behind a paywall but the move makes sense. Nobody watches basic TV anymore, mainly the middle ages and elerly. Younger people use streaming servies. TNT sports, by its name, streams lots of sports so i can see the logic. The future of basic TV as a whole is on its way out

My experience of watching the Commonwealth Games was basically “I’m bored… hey look there’s some live sport on Freeview. May as well stick it on” and tbh I felt like most people I know watched it in the same way. We didn’t actually care about it but… it’s on I guess!
Putting it behind a paywall means I’m almost certainly not going to tune into it.
