  1. Don’t you find it ridiculous that the government won’t release details or video of the recent drone footage to the Defence Committee member?
If you want people to be serious on defence matters, then they should know the truth, hiding stuff doesn’t help their case.

I’m interested as to why it would be an issue to release the footage of the drones at all. It isn’t sensitive material, it is a recording that was taken on a fisheries patrol vessel way out in Dublin Bay. How would it in any way contain material that would jeopardise national security if it were to be released? Withholding the footage will only push people in the direction of thinking the incident either didn’t happen, or was confirmed as not being malicious actors but still being used to push some sort of agenda. It’s ridiculous that the Irish public can’t see footage of drones that allegedly posed a direct threat to our national security.

I mean it’s a pretty basic request. We already know it happened so just release the footage.

  4. These sort of demands are US style political bullshit encouraging the gullible types who are being told to “do their own research”, oftentimes accompanied by Russian bots pedalling misinformation, and TDs should know better. Thankfully we still have trust in our military here, and we haven’t yet had it undermined by misinformation and malign foreign actors.

As another commentor pointed out the TD does not have clearance.

In fact, Ireland is one of the few countries in the world that does not have a security clearance system.

Its incomprehensible because it’s not like it’s something that’s particularly expensive or difficult to set up. It nothing but pure laziness on Irish governments going back decades.

There’s a certain schadenfreude watching the government caught with their pants down over this drone incident. This is what decades of under investment in defence under the guise of ‘ah shure be grand’ gets you. What did these clowns expect?

This wouldn’t be released under an FOI as it falls under section 33 (national security, defence and international relations exemption) so it’s 100% not getting released under an opposition TD request.
