The Christmas miracle we’ve all been waiting for

‘We have to speed up the sacking process,’ says HSE boss Bernard Gloster

The chief executive of the HSE has said new laws are needed to speed up staff dismissals and hold public servants to account.

In an interview with the Sunday Independent, Bernard Gloster, who will step down in March after three years as CEO, criticised the current disciplinary procedures available, saying they are not sustainable, are open to legal challenge and can “go on for years”.

He called for a single statutory accountability process across the public service that can withstand scrutiny.

He also challenged the view that no one gets sacked from the health service, revealing for the first time that at least 38 staff have been dismissed since 2020.

The problem with this type of policy is that you’ll end up with the useless people who should be fired doing the firing.

why should their be special laws for speed up staff dismissals , people shouldnr need special laws to fire them , how about the HSE keep to the law thats in now

HSE is subject to the same law as everyone else in terms of employment law , they dotn need special treatment

Would he not have waited a couple of weeks more? It could have been a Jan story not a 4 days before Christmas story.

As someone who works in the public service I’m 100% behind this. The number of useless tossers who don’t get pulled up during their probation and then are allowed to coast for the rest of their careers cos no one has the energy do PMDS properly and ID the underperformance in writing and act on it is mind-boggling. The likes of me are left to clean up.

The only problem is, as someone else mentioned, a significant number of these useless tossers are among those who are supposed to be doing the sacking.
