Cant wait for the scrotes to get ankle tagged, ignore it, and then get their punishment suspended, all at a huge price to the tax payer!
Wonderful news. The good people in the private punishment industry will be so happy. Can we please give Gardai more power to convict people or at the very least allow them taser people. I finally feel Ireland has a great approach and we are putting our money into all the right places.
The first part…
Well I guess at least once we have private for profit prisons we won’t have people with hundreds of convictions walking the streets.
Might get some cheap veg and jeans out of it as well.
Electricity, gas etc. makes sense. Bit of competition is (in theory) good.
This? Wheres the fucking competition for ankle monitors? There’s no place this ends other than us getting ridden
Great idea! Because why spend €100 of taxpayer money to tag a convict, when you can spend €1000 of taxpayer money at your pal’s company to tag a convict.
End stage neoliberalism.
Privatise everything to extract as much taxpayer monies as possible.
Fabulous work.
Now someone’s cousin, or some ape they went to school with, can earn millions off the fact that they’ve made shite of every single thing in this country with a harp above the door.
This is a slippery slope, privatisation like this will only end in failure.
Fine Gael is discovering new and exciting ways of wasting our tax money
G4S managed the electronic tagging system for the Irish Prison Service way back in 2010 when it was first piloted. The article seems to leave that out. It worked well but never took off as the public finances were in a dire way and funding wasn’t available to continue its rollout.
I’m weary of privatisation, but I’m not sure it’s best use of resources to have Prison Officers or Gardaí monitor the tags 24/7. If an event occurs the security company immediately notify either the Irish Prison Service or An Garda Śíochána who are responsible for enforcement. Do we really want Gardaí sitting behind a desk monitoring movements 24/7 when they could just as easily be notified of pertinent events?
We don’t have Gardaí monitoring alarm systems even for many Government buildings. Private security monitor alarms and notify the Gardaí of activations.
Article is a bit alarmist. This initiative will not get off the ground if it’s 100% reliant on the Irish Prison Service or An Garda Śíochána. I’d rather it got up and running.
Hey, stop copying all the naff British policies that don’t work!
In US you have to pay for your ankle monitor, it should be the case here too. But I do see a problem, with limited number of guards if someone were to remove their ankle monitor the guards would never be able to catch them again…
jaysus what a scam
Outsource everything. Get some advisors in also to see who to outsource it to. We are literally thick fuckers on this Ireland that can’t do anything ourself.
K
yes, keep following other countries failures.
The US has shown how bad a idea privatisation of the prison system is.
Definately something to be avoided
Great.
Now we’re going to have private companies lobbying government to allow prisoners and criminals to get off lightly so they can sell more ankle tags.
Get it done.
