SEND needs to be changed, it’s simply unaffordable in its present form.

As a teacher, time to retrain as a taxi driver! I’ve already got a driving licence, an enhanced DBS and my own car, so I should be almost there!

Surely there must be someone in government going “hang on a minute, we are getting fleeced here” and try and do something about it?

Government shouldn’t be just paying anything at any price but we should also be questioning the mindset and approach of all these companies, not just taxi companies, that exploit the state for insane fees for everything. People like thise behind these fees rinse their own fellow citizens but will then blame poor people on benefits for taxes. Get fucked if you think its acceptable to exploit SEND children to line your own pockets to this extent.

It used to be done by the local authorities directly with drivers.

But of course, efficiency of outsourcing apparently.

We voted for it for forty years.

Surely with the amount they are paying to private firms, they can get a CIC/non profit to it? On wait.. I forgot this is a way to let your friends get rich.

There 0 reason to hiring some random taxi firm to do this! Councils either should be hiring buses which a lot do or there own car service

Wife works at a school for girls with moderate disabilities, autism, cerebral palsy, downs syndrome etc

I would say about 70% are given taxis for school drop off and collection.

It’s absolute chaos when they all arrive.

We live in a very affluent area, I would hazard a guess that 50% could be paid by the parents themselves without even noticing the cost out of their bank account

But those 20% completely and unequivocally need it, their parents can’t afford it and some of the stories I’ve heard of how the parents treat these kids, they deserve so much better.

There’s so many taxis collecting up special needs kids to go to distant schools and I mean a fucking lot.

It’s clearly an issue, I very much doubt it’s the taxi drivers themselves getting paid that much, more likely it’s a company who profits the same way as Uber, another issue that society has, someone else gets paid for someone else’s work.

I can promise you the issue would be fixed if the government actually set up the service themselves and paid a livable wage to these taxi drivers getting rinsed.

I say this as someone who got drove around a lot.

The man who drove me was lovely, he definitely wasn’t rich or anything like that

It’s genuinely shocking that these rates are being rubber-stamped. The SEND system is clearly broken if this is what passes for fiscal responsibility. You’d think at least one person in the chain would question such blatant overspending. This feels like a systemic failure, not just a one-off bad deal.
