Did no planners, engineers etc ever look at South Park in Galway City? It was a filled in city dump. In the 2000s, a postgrad researcher from the university produced a paper saying there was high levels of heavy metal contamination in the soil. It transpired the levels of contamination weren’t as harmful as originally thought given the use of the lands, but I remember it being closed as a child due to the findings.

Reminded me in X years’ time if residents come across contamination or radiation here…

Methane Will need to be managed. I wouldn’t fancy living on top of toxic waste materials under the foundation of my house.

    Headline’s misleading …

“Development of lands close to former municipal dump to be accelerated for housing”

“The old municipal dump in the northwest of the area, which closed in the late 1990s, is subject to ongoing environmental monitoring and the collection of leachate and gas. It was not considered suitable for housing.”
