doesn’t feel like it, but maybe social media and smart phones have made theft more visible

Turns out, Europe has become a lot safer over the past 10 years.
I must be misremembering, but I could have sworn it was the other way around — that it was safer ten years ago./s

It’s easy calculus, in Romania the ‘values’ have migrated to Spain and Italy where they can contribute to this statistics
And the question is: why there are more romanian beggers in Italy than in Romania? Because they are allowed and welcome, here in Ro they receive 100-200€ allowance per month so they cannot survive while not working
You should send all of them back home so they can work on something, and also these values are voting for our ‘right’ future
Edit: while you’re downvoting, I want to see replies

Interesting to see Spain dropping while others spike, I wonder how much is better reporting vs real change. Would be cool to compare this with tourism numbers or unemployment rates.

just some extra info regarding Hungary. They’ve changed the penal codes in the mid 2010, so if the value of theft is under ~2500EUR, it is not considered a fellony, and you are just getting some cash-penalty, not jail time.
There wasn’t enough space in prisons, and they wanted to stop a trend, when many tried to survive winter by doing a small theft around september-october, offendable with 3-6 monhs in jail, just to have a roof, heating and free meals during the winter…

I wish these maps still included the UK. I know we aren’t in the EU anymore but believe it or not, a lot of us (49%) didn’t choose to leave. Stop punishing us for the other 51%’s opinion!

Not accurate for Italy at all. Theft has increased dramatically, especially in the north-east.

Ah… Luxembourg.
What a lovely place (to rob someone’s house).

The devil is in the details. Yes the theft rate has dropped in Denmark over the last two decades by more than 50%, but the number of thefts is still relatively high compared to Norway and Sweden.
More densily populated. Police mostly ignoring theft unless it is hundreds of thousands stolen. Lots and lots of bike thefts. Somewhat open borders with very little control in the past. In the past organized crime gangs could fill truckloads of stolen goods and sell them in Eastern Europe. Many Danes having two houses. The beach/vacation house near the coast line would be rented out or empty for weeks every year. Easy for the thief to keep an eye out for the optimal time to do the deed. (With easy access to surveillance you can stil do that, but chances are you will be seen).

Funny how stats are always the opposite of what these far-right doom thinkers claim. Unless you’re in Greece, I have no idea what’s going on there.
