    >”What we cannot do is defend against threats from a distance or even a full-scale attack on our country,” said Suessli, who is stepping down at the end of the year.

    >”It’s burdensome to know that in a real emergency, only a third of all soldiers would be fully equipped,” he said in an interview published on Saturday.

    >Switzerland has pledged to gradually raise defence spending to about 1% of GDP by around 2032, up from roughly 0.7% now – far below the 5% level agreed by NATO countries.

    >At that pace, the Swiss military would only be fully ready by around 2050.

Switzerland doesn’t need to be worried about a full scale attack on them, I’d say. Though it’s good that they are working on getting better.

  3. aldentim239 on

True for almost any country today modern wars aren’t fought solo anymore.

  4. Maybe they should try to form some sort of defensive alliance with their neighbours.

  5. dustofdeath on

By who? You are protected by allied/neutral countries around you.

  6. ArugulaElectronic478 on

Might be a good idea to keep this one close to the vest in internal government circles, don’t ya think champ?

  7. leaflock7 on

if Switzerland reaches the point to be facing a full-scale attack then the rest of Europe is in a very deep shit

  8. General-Knowledge7 on

Almost no country is at full military capacity in peace time. This constant narrative that no country is ready for war is pointless because it’s completely normal that that is the case.

  9. Nono6768 on

Even when you’re freeloading on the airspace defences of literally every country surrounding you?

  10. Due-Stock2774 on

This is for fear mongers, no one is attacking the Swiss anytime soon. And if someone responds with “Russia” just know my response will be laughing at you, they’re having enough trouble filling up their gas tanks

  11. UnlikelyHero727 on

Switzerland produces only half the food it consumes, and imports 70% of its energy; an invasion is the last thing they need to worry about. No one with a brain would invade when an embargo would do the work.

The Swiss army is not the guarantor of its existence; it’s their diplomacy.

  12. Bulky_Win_453 on

At least they have their mountains, which builds a natural defense line 😛

  13. medievalvelocipede on

How does he define a full-scale attack, I wonder.

  14. Comfortable-Exit8924 on

switzerland was fine even when nazis controlled europe.

  15. SnooJokes1527 on

Is Russia on the verge of collapse, or is it preparing for a full-scale invasion of Europe? Or perhaps, is it invading Europe while collapsing?

  16. Gamblinman97 on

Nobody is invading a country where they themselves are holding their corrupt assets lmao

  17. quixotichance on

The threat realistically isn’t full scale attack, it’s psy-ops aka disinformation campaign. That’s much more cost effective and much more likely to succeed at least partially. You can get the population to vote against its own interest either in some referendum (eg Brexit) or install a government that aids the aggressor agenda

  18. UnComfortable_Fee on

Swiss neutrality is ignoring the moral side and taking cash from the evil.

  19. Movilitero on

no problem, just accept everybodys gold, like they used to 😉

  20. I don’t blame Switzerland. It’s probably really nice to be neutral. However, that it worked in the past, doesn’t mean it will work in the future. The Netherlands was neutral during WW1 and tried to repeat it in WW2, but it didn’t work. Switzerland has to consider the current situtation and wonder if their situation hasn’t changed.

  21. Starskeet on

Aren’t like a third of all people living in the country not Swiss citizens? I hope they would take up arms for their chosen home.

  22. mutantdishtowel on

I thought “shoot twice and go home” was a thing.

  23. But that’s the point of NATO, each country isn’t going to have a full force, but if one is attacked all respond, which is an overwhelming force

*Edit: ignore me, I read Sweden for some reason*

  24. GrannyFlash7373 on

Russian BOT Propaganda. Who is threatening the Swiss anyway????? ANYBODY can get this image and make the headline read any way they want.

  25. Alive-Opportunity-23 on

But they invest so much in defense industry and technological advancements applied in defense

  26. Interesting-Dream863 on

I do believe this guy just wants a larger budget.

In what scenario Switzerland gets a massive attack from anybody that cannot fight??

    Is NATO whole invading?? Russia??

It would do a lot of damage, but the country remains naturally hard to break.

  27. Coinsworthy on

Best defense is storing your enemy’s wealth in your secret bank accounts.

  28. throwawayowl999 on

No nukes = no sovereignty. That’s the sad truth everyone seems to ignore. You know what committing war crimes and being neutral have in common? Both are only possible from a position of strength. Switzerland was in a position of strength in WW1 and WW2. In 2025, you are only in a position of strength if you have nukes. Not an army. Not the most advanced air force. Just nukes, and a decent way of delivery.

Right now, countries like Switzerland are free for grabs. Russia alone won’t grab anything. They’re struggling in Ukraine. But Russia, China and US combined? Why not? Might as well divide all the countries without nukes between them.

  29. Switzerland is literally the safest country in the world. Not because of the mountains though. But because too many oligarchs have money there!

  30. ScoobiusMaximus on

So who is going to attack Switzerland? Looking at a map they seem pretty secure unless they piss off NATO.

  31. Why would anyone attack Switzerland? This is just fear-mongering

  32. Imaginary_Ad3195 on

Can any country do that successfully besides the massive nations ? Like I mean, if china just attacked Switzerland by itself, then of course there is no chance.

  33. omnibossk on

Their whole country is a Swiss cheese of bomb shelters, there will be a lot of work to conquer the them all

  34. Alexander_Ruthol on

How lucky for them that they’re surrounded by friends, then.

Maybe they could consider joining those friends in some sort of alliance.

  35. Corrie7686 on

Switzerland never could, and they always knew it.
They have excellent fixed positions, and a citizen soldier conscription /service model.
But it’s not got the depth to fall back like other countries, it’s surrounded on all sides by mountains and passes, that can be defended in delaying actions but could never be held long term.
This isn’t really a new thing.

  36. onechroma on

    I mean… defend by who?

Their neighbours won’t ever attack and invade Switzerland, not for nothing they managed to “convince” everyone to let them be in both world wars

In any case, Switzerland wouldn’t be able to hold against Germany if at a serious war threat, even if they managed to spend 20% GDP on defence.

And if someone else is already at their borders, it means there’s a huge war in the continent and Germany, Austria… the EU even, have crumbled, so at that point, what could Switzerland really do? Not to talk even if at that point nukes aren’t at the air.

All the “countries have to spend big bucks in the war machine” argument is nonsense in a lot of times, I imagine only lobbied by the people that get big profits from it of course (and the US war machine, Lockheed Martin or Palantir need their sweet money)

This is stupid. Let resources be used as efficiently as possible for the common good (healthcare, housing, education…) and avoid brain rot people pushing for a country like Switzerland wasting them into “defense just because” out of a hypothetical scare scenario that isn’t even plausible

  37. AdMysterious8464 on

Why do redditors have such a hate-boner for Switzerland? Swiss neutrality, specifically in regards to WWII, regularly gets treated as a greater evil than the actual perpetrators of WWII crimes. Its ridicilous. Especially considering that Switzerland only had the choice between neutrality or annihalation during that time.

And as for all the other various accusations (freeloading on security, abusing banking secrecy, tax haven) are likewise at the very best only partially true, but in most cases pure fiction.
