  1. European Energy, the Danish company which already has notable industrial interests in Italy, has been given the final authorisation for the investment (worth 200 million euros) for a 225 megawatts agrivoltaic project (agri-pv) near Vizzini, in Sicily. The decision has come after the company has won the bid, in the recent “FerX contract for difference” public tender, for five solar projects spread between Sicily, Apulia and Molise, for a total of 513 megawatts and 500 million euros worth of total economic commitment. Among them there is also the Vizzini Park, in which E.E. has chosen to direct their largest invetment.

The company leaders promise that, once the plant will be operational, the project (first authorised in 2023) will form the largest solar park in Italy, combining large scale solar energy production with continuous agricultural use “And thus supporting the italian objectives in the field of renewable energy”. The project involves the construction of elevated photovoltaic structures to allow the agricultural work to continue beneath, thus allowing a duble usage of the fields and long term productivity.

“An investment such as the one in Vizzini, which will combine clean energy with valuable agricultural crops – claims Alessandro Migliorini, the director and country manager for European Energy in Italy – holds great value also in terms of industrial supply chain and foreign investment here in Italy. Given the nature and the size of the project, since it will be necessary to invest more than 200 million and, I must stress, that most of these resources will be tied to direct investments in Italy”.

Indeed, continued the manager, the technological component tied to the photovoltaic panels, “Is worth around a third of the value. While the more specific know-how tied to civilian infrastructure, technical design and so on, will contribute to grow a supply chain of industrial capabilites, in the agri-voltaic sector, which is extremely important for a nation such as Italy, which has both record levels of sunshine exposure and a great tradition of high value crops. For this reason too, European Eneregy has chosen to be among the founding members of a new association, called Agrivoltaica, dedicated to the development of initiatives in this sector, in order to create a bridge between industry, electrical operators, institutions and the autorizing subjects”.

The integrated design of the Vizzini porject, adds Migliorini, “Demonstrates how it’s possibile to continue the agricultural work within the development of large scale photovoltaic plants”. Once the plant becomes operational, Migliorini concludes, it will be larger than all the previous italian plants connected to the grid.

“The recent result of the FerX bid – stresses Thorvald Spangaars, executive vice president and director of project development for European Energy – guarantees long term revenue stability, and has thus allowed us to make this investment decision”. The company has already developed various large scale projects in Italy, including the Troia solar park, which was connected to the grid in 2022, and that was also, at the time, the largest solar plant in Italy.
