Swap to a holiday home from regular skiing trips to alps. It’s the small things to stop you from being poor

Every wine ive ever bought for myself has been somewhere between €6-€13. Never noticed a difference between those and the more expensive ones ive been gifted.

At least it’s not another watery puke Christmas dinner people insist on posting.

Consider repurposing your sun room as a home office rather than spending €50,000 on a garden office.

I refuse to believe that guy has any taste buds left after all those years polishing Varadkar’s ring with his tongue

20 euro bottle of wine my ass. Just go to portugal, but bring all the 5 euro bottles to Ireland.

Folks, this is the stupidity representing this nation. Wake the f up.

I’d prefer to take advice from someone who didn’t end up as a politics journalist at the Irish Times.

He is the sort of gobshite who probably tells people at dinner parties this time of year that he finds it best to change his BMW for a new one every year because that way you only have to pay an easy €10k or €12k every year rather than €60k every 3 or 4 years. And to think we rely on twats like this to hold our politicians to account on our behalf.

I can’t even afford a 20 euro bottle of wine. I buy the 7 euro ones from Aldi.

Buy summer and winter tyres to double the life. Everyone knows this

“I recommend a day’s shooting. This is wrongly assumed by many to be an elitist, aristocratic pursuit; perhaps so in the neighbouring jurisdiction, but not in Ireland. Shooting is simply something that lots of people, mostly but not all from the countryside, do. There are about 25,000 members of gun clubs, according to the National Association of Regional Game Councils, and around 240,000 legally held firearms in Ireland, governed by probably the strictest gun laws in Europe.

If you don’t fancy blasting away at wildfowl or assorted birds, there are lots of places where you can shoot at targets and where your teenagers will be taught the basics. I promise you, they’ll love it.”

This guy thinks I should spend twenty euro on a bottle of wine, pay to go shooting, pay to go sailing and – naturally, of COURSE – go to church.

Money really does buy you happiness, I guess.

    I’m glad I hate wine, I couldn’t even justify a €10 bottle.

Don’t fly to New York for Christmas shopping. Go to Henry/Moore st instead. Win/win Saving money and the planet

    Oh thank God. Finally.

I’m sitting here with layers of clothing in my damp, freezing, mouldy, overpriced apartment clutching my last €40 and wondering whether to turn on the heating again or buy a single bottle of Chardonnay, when Pat Leahy descended from the heavens via the Irish Times to save me from my own financial illiteracy.

Don’t spend €40, spend €20. Wow. Groundbreaking. Truly. Why aren’t we teaching this in schools? If I do this every weekend for the next 450 years, I might actually be able to afford a deposit for a house in Limerick. Maybe 700 years for Dublin.

I also LOVE the tip about joining a choir and going to church. Because nothing says I am coping with the cost of living crisis like singing Ave Maria in a freezing granite building to distract myself from the fact that my rental is just as cold, except the church has better structural integrity and prob fewer healthcode violations.

It is nice to know that while the government spends €336k on a bike shed, Pat’s solution for the rest of us is basically becoming a 19th century street urchin with a hobby. Thank you, Pat.

Next week, I hope he tackles the 16,000 people in emergency accommodation by suggesting they simply choose a smaller cardboard box or practice mindfulness while sleeping in a doorway. Or maybe he can suggest that people looking to buy a house should not spend €600k but instead €300k to save money! I can’t wait.

Maybe, and I know this is a wild thought for the political journalist, instead of choosing between a €20 bottle and a €40 bottle of wine to numb the pain of a systemic housing failure, we could try choosing a different name on the ballot paper?

But no, you are right Pat. It is definitely the Malbec and not FF or FG.

  16. Your old tipple at 20e is now the new one at 40e.

Everybody- March with your feet Don’t buy it.

  17. PixelNotPolygon on

I choose an €8 bottle of wine instead of a €10 one …does that count?

  18. TwistedPepperCan on

Ah great. I’ve always read this lads political opinions and thought “what an irredeemable gobshite, I wonder how he gets his shirts so blue.” Now I finally know.

  19. spicybeanburger420 on

I’m going to start setting government buildings on fire if I see any more drivel like this or that “Hey cool housing crisis hack – move back in with your family” video. This feels genuinely insulting at this stage, genuinely just feels like they’re seeing how far they can push it

  20. Smooth-Object7610 on

Cant read the article, but I was about to argue that this is just rage bait, but like… I don’t think Pat Leahy is trying to rage bait us? How oblivious is he that he thinks this is helpful to anyone?

  21. Ifortified on

I’m living like a King if I can pick a €20 bottle over the 9.50 one. My local doesn’t even stock a €40 bottle. It’s 9.75 when I’m splashing out.

  22. TrivialFacts on

People that think the average person is buying a 20 euro bottle of wine no less a 40 euro one are completely out of touch with how financially insecure people are.

  23. MiddleAgedMoan on

I can only read the headline but I reckon every now and again the media run with stuff like this and then sit back laughing at the plebs.

They did it during Covid, Claire Byrne & her zorb balls for example. The IT have also been doing it for years in their property supplements – what you can buy for €500,000 – a chateau in France, a villa on a Greek island or a 3 bed semi in Finglas.

They can’t publish this and keep a straight face, surely?

(and spare me the Dr. Rumack Airplane replies 😁)

  24. Professional_Elk_489 on

Instead of choosing €200 bottles, choose €20 wine. Might save you €20K per year on this one simple trick

  25. bornsf82 on

“If they can’t eat bread, let them eat cake” How condescending of him. I think a €40 bottle of wine is the last thing on most people’s minds.

  26. Such_Significance905 on

Lads, there is a reason why the word of the year is “ragebait”.

This article got past an editor or two as well, they know exactly what they’re doing and they’re hoping for a conversation like this to temporarily warm up the corpse of their industry.

  27. personfromdublin on

What an amazing life hack! How about we all skip the Wagyu Beef with a side of Caviar and just go for some corned beef and Cabbage?
Goes to show the likes of him and the circles he writes about are completely out of touch. What a gobshite.

  28. AmsterPup on

I’ve been wiping my ass with 20s instead of the usual 50s, but we all have to make sacrifices at this difficult time

  29. waywaytallerthanyou on

I actually used to buy the 4 euro bottle of wine but then they made that illegal
