1.7B$ is steep but air defense is one of those things you only miss when you don’t have it

All these defence systems are great, but I am worried that all we seem to do is buy/build defensive capability. If you want to defeat Russia if they attack, you need to be able to destroy their oil infrastructure and logistics on day one of the war. That would take, for the EU as a whole thousands to tens of thousands longrange cruise missiles, whether ground-, air- or sealaunched. Do we have those? To deter Russia, it would be good if we could show that kind of capability. They need their oilfields, refineries and terminals. They need their railwaybridges, their munitionsfactories, their military airfields. Europe needs to be able to destroy them if Russia ever becomes crazy enough to attack.

  3. I mean nice to have, but if somethings reaches spain through air we have some other problems no?

Hope Europe will invest more in SAMP/T in the future, we can’t let the dependence on the US grow even more.

Before anyone comments on Patriot not being EU products, it’s important to understand that procurement takes years and as much as I would have loved for Spain to buy SAMP/T instead, it does not go against what was recently decided by the EU in its SAFE funding program.

A very bad decision IMHO. They should have joined the SAMP/T consortium with France and Italy and been part of the European effort in AD. The UK should have joined it as well, we already operate Aster missiles in the Royal Navy, the skills and experience are there. There is still time I hope.

  7. Ffs. It’s time to untie EU from the US, this is not the right way.

Pouring more money into your enemy’s economy. Thank you Spain for undermining Europe a little bit more.

I still dont understand why Spain has not given Ukraine any Patriot systems considering how low the danger is to them

  10. This might be the price to pay for not spending 5% ?

    Gotta buy some yankee stuff?

Anyone who wants to comment on sourcing domestically in Europe should understand the shortfalls of the SAMP/T.

Simply put, there are roughly 5X the amount of Patriot interceptors produced each year. Currently, only 2-300 SAMP/T are produced annually. That’s roughly 1/5 the amount of long-range missiles Russia can produce.
