      Everywhere all at once

I’ve never had much time for conspiracy theorists but it is so plain to see it’s not even a conspiracy. Golden age of the internet has been over for a while but the next age is gonna be so shit. Enjoy it while it lasts

    4. ErikT738 on

I don’t like it but I can sorta see the need, with all the bot accounts.

The beginning of the end of free speech as we used to know it.

Everyone hated Denmark’s privacy-invading ideas, therefore Ireland will continue them…

    7. Purple-Bread7293 on

      Not the way.

      1) Allow fully anonymous websites, eg Reddit.
      2) Require ID for websites in which the user is expected to be a real person, eg Facebook
      3) Make a user choose whether they are anonymous, or real, for websites like Twitter, on signup.

I’m not sure you can put the genie back in the bottle at this point, but I’d agree with the view that online anonymity has been a detrimental thing to society.

    9. They just can’t handle not knowing every single bit about you. I shouldn’t have to identify myself on the Internet just like I don’t have to identify myself if I participate in a protest

Is there no freedom of speech written into founding charters that would preclude this stuff?

    11. Valahul77 on

This would be hard to impossible to implement in practice. Anyone can VPN to any country these days where Ireland has no jurisdiction.

    12. urgencynow on

Good. Put the Russian/Chinese/American trolls and bots away

    13. AgyhalottBolcsesz on

Good luck. In the era of VPNs and all kinds of shitfuckery, this is one of the things that are definitely not happening. How about policing your fucking coastlines a little better?

    14. TeflonBoy on

Unpopular opinion. This is a good thing. Anonymous internet is ruining society.

    15. The only way to guarantee genuine interactions online is through verification of ID.

This is absolutely necessary in today’s world of AI bots and indian bot farms. Free speech doesn’t come from being anonymous and never did, nor should it.

100% essential. It also doesn’t mean you have to publish your name with the account – just gets verified when you register.

I would like to see the ID country of origin being published though so I know when I am talking to an indian bot farm worker.

    16. legitaccountnotabot on

Should ban the non anonymous too, social media is a plague.

We have maybe 2 years maximum left of a somewhat free internet in Europe. Was fun, as I’m going offline the day Wikipedia asks for my ID and reason fr visiting, the internet is a free space, noone tells me what I can say (try me UK) or what content to consume.

    18. suiluhthrown78 on

Surely the only people who would oppose this are bots from Moscow? I don’t have anything to hide and other good people wouldn’t either.

    19. lyzoloficial on

I don’t understand, aren’t these the kinds of things that happen in Russia’s terrible, authoritarian, and controlling dictatorship?

    20. hospitalizedzombie on

Soon I’ll change my VPN to china because the internet over there will be less restricted.

    21. TheComplimentarian on

Won’t someone think of the bots, and the huge numbers of democracy destroying troll accounts?

    22. Chemical-Vacation697 on

Wish more European countries would do this.. would really help all countries.

    23. hertz3313 on

Ireland should get rid of fucking drug addicts first. Thats insane how Dublin looks like. After that, fucking construction mafia.

    24. I used to make fun of conspiracists but slowly im realizing they were right

    25. LustyArgonianMaidz on

twitter introduced a system where they identified what country a post came from. lasted 10 minutes until Elon shut it down. bad for business apparently

    26. DasistMamba on

I’m from Belarus, where you can go to prison for criticizing the government, but even here anonymous accounts and VPNs are not banned.

    27. AtraVenator on

One thing for sure about he Irish government is that they are full of shit and can get nothing done. They have a metro project in planning since 1976. 😂

I’m so glad i moved to Switzerland where something like this would be subject to a national vote. Really not liking the direction the eu is moving in

r/europe would become a dead sub if it happened across europe

    32. VanillaCommercial394 on

There was a riot in Dublin last year after an immigrant attacked a child with a knife .
Social media was awash that night with posts hyping up the violence and generally stirring the shit, it subsequently turned out a huge % of these posts were from anonymous accounts outside Ireland .

    33. KanedaSyndrome on

What the fuck is going on on those islands over there… you’re going totalitarian? Learning Newspeak already?

    34. Xenomemphate on

Its wild, all the stories of people being forced to surrender details of their social media when trying to enter the US gets rightly criticised on this sub but when our own governments look to do the exact same – only to their own citizens, plenty of people running around acting like it is necessary.
