I can’t even lie, if we Americans didn’t have a total ban on Chinese EVs, I’d buy one right now. lol. Europe has to make a choice. Save your industry and jobs, or buy cheap and really nice Chinese EVs. Can’t do both.

  2. Similar_Put4709 on

They are cheap, they are technologically better, and they are well designed. Fascist China is winning on all fronts. Corporatism for the W.

  3. NewOil7911 on

Europe can do whatever tariffs it wants, the real problem for automobiles exporters is their loss of market share in Emerging markets to China.

And no trade war can’t ever fix that

  4. throw-awewe-iy on

Technologically they are not that far ahead as people think, but cheaper definitely and time-to-market also. Where does something being cheap(er) come from? That is the real question, and I think that you will find if you actually do some research, that a lot of our cost difference is due to bureaucracy that deals with negative externalities and the fact that the majority of the supporting industry is European – Better wages, more social support. Trying to be fair leads to bigger costs, who knew.

It is really an absolute NO brainer that we need to be buying European only. If the Chinese EVs get majority market share they will start raising prices too, don’t worry. They actually have the capability to force their own companies to stop competing with eachother.

You cant afford a new european car in eastern europe. Even the cheap ones are very expensive.

10 years ago VW literally laughed at the idea of EVs, they converted Gold into eGolf and launched it with a range of less than 100 km , BMW launched i3 which was a joke of car. When these failed (obviously) they said see, EVs don’t work and then went back to ICE cars.

Meanwhile China and US were working on EVs with serious investments. It’s not that German auto executives hate EVs,it’s the issue with the thousands of parts which are sourced from different companies and the lobby is quite strong.

EU pushes for environmental friendly policies and get pissed when people choose american or chinese cars because now it’s not patriotic or FaSaCisT.

  7. Translation: European billionaire car lobbyists are reminding politicians who sponsored them

When you’re mentally still stuck in the early 2000’s, but it’s almost 2026…

  9. Typingdude3 on

VW had an opportunity to get ahead of the game but failed. At least America blocks import of Chinese EVs so German brands do good there. Americans love German cars.

  10. Wonder what the industry veterans are planning to do about it.

  11. v3ritas1989 on

They are doing that for a few years now. And every time I actually look at the data I have to scratch my head. Like “BYD increases sales by 500%.. stranger danger…” and then you look up the numbers and they increased from 500 to 2500 sales, which is just around 1% of market share. Or… BYD -> Big Ship-> delivering thousands of cars” well sure… but they have not actually sold them, just delivered them to their distribution center.

  12. Kaya_kana on

The industry’s plan seems to be too keep doing exactly what they are doing and not under any circumstances innovate. We’ll see how well that works out now they successfully lobbied the EU to let them do so

  13. Original_HD on

Making cars that were 15k and now they sell for 27k is not making it better either… New car prices are ridiculous.

  14. First-Hospital3993 on

How about EU automakers actually make cars that are not overpriced and friendly to repair and maintain ?

F you Eurocars, jot sorry for them. Doubt that China is better, but at least they are cheaper

  15. Khorvus-Max on

I honestly haven’t seen one Chinese car on the street.

  16. loogilineloom on

Price your cars fairly, dont bitch and moan, its free market. If someone has better and cheaper thing to sell, then that what it is. We as consumers hear everyday about free and open market From those corporations, when prices for fuel, electricity, food etc rise alarmingly and without a reason.

  17. Free-Internet1981 on

EU car manufacturers should probably sound the alarm on their lack of innovation, complacency and their outrageous prices for mediocre offerings 🫩

  18. Maybe if they innovated during the last decade on the core technology instead of useless features in cars. Chinese car imports to the EU are tariffed, if they can’t compete against tariffed vehicles from 10 to 35% they deserve to disappear.

  19. Old-Road-501 on

Maybe start building something other than cars?

Drones, perhaps? If we can get some Ukrainian specialists to teach the rest of Europe, that could be a win-win situation.

  20. kkapulic on

Future of Europe is tourism it is only industry that still thrives in Europe. It requires zero skills or inovations only old buildings and sunny beaches. Germans should refocus too while they can.

  21. Common-Ad6470 on

It’s easy, instead of trying to exclude cars that are clearly better in both features and price, learn from the Chinese cars and apply to the EU ones making them competitive.

  22. watch-nerd on

First Europe got itself hooked on Russian oil and natural gas. Now it’s Chinese EVs.

Were no geopolitical security lessons learned?

Step 1. make a good product, step 2. price it accordingly.

China, beaten. This consulting advice is free to use.

  24. Imakemyownnamereddit on

This is the consequences of our arrogance and greed when it came to China.

The assumption was, they would never catch up with us and never be a true rival. We didn’t see them as a threat and wanted to enter their markets. Even at the cost of handing over our intellectual property.

Well thanks to EVs, the European car industry has gone from world leading to behind the times. More expensive products, that simply aren’t superior to their cheaper Chinese rivals.

How many jobs will that cost Europe?

  25. How about you Europe starts making reliable and affordable cars for people? I would love to buy a new car and I just can’t afford one.

It makes me angry as a consumer that they slap more tarrifs on Chinese vehicles and make them less affordable.

  26. In the summer I rented a Skoda Octavia station wagon with all the options. It was almost new with only 500km. I drove it for more than 2000km. It was the worst car I have driven. Underpowered, uncomfortable seats and a lot of noise. I was curious about the price new and when I checked this car was more than $43k euro. I can imagine how worst the cheaper models are. Guys, european automakers are ripping you off. The sooner they go out of business the better because more effort will be put on things that you are good at.

  27. daguerrotype_type on

For whom does the alarm ring? Industry veterans, just make better and more cost effective cars, FFS.

  28. CaliTexan22 on

AI says – “AlixPartners, a leading consultancy, projects that only 15 of the current 129 electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid brands in China will remain financially viable by 2030, due to intense market competition, overcapacity, and a prolonged price war.”

  29. blankarage on

did those same people sound the alarm when european cars dominated the market?

  30. mykeyboardsucks on

What the fuck is european car manufacturers are doing anyways? Like, can someone tell what exactly are they competing on? They are certainly not cheap (the Chinese are). They are not reliable (the japanese are). They are not premium (new Mercedes cars feel shittier than older volkswagen cars). They are not good at making EV cars.

So what exactly is the strategy here? Trying to catch up to Chinese EV cars while buying Chinese batteries? Not going to happen. Competing China on cost? Just nope. Making the premium stuff? Not with this level of quality, that is getting shittier every day. So what is the plan here, exactly?

While the auto industry is important and employs many people, they don’t seem to have any sort of idea what they are doing.

  31. lospotezbrt on

Maybe if they made better products for better prices they wouldn’t be losing lol

Dacia went from complete laughing stock to one of the top selling car brands in Europe over 20 years because they focused on the “everyday budget” market

Meanwhile, the stigma around Chinese products being bad is all but gone thanks to a good track record over the last 20 years

Not to mention repair costs and repair exclusivity that’s pushed by major brands like BMW or Audi

  32. probablyaythrowaway on

Well when you make shit cars, charge obscene amounts for them while removing features and making them impossible to repair of course people will look elsewhere.

I’m not thinking about my country or Europe when I’m buying a car, frankly I couldn’t give a shit where it comes from as long as it’s reasonably priced, good quality and has the features I need.
