SEND is already draining the energy of everyone in this profession, and this new responsibility thrust upon teachers will make it much worse. There’s not even additional compensation or planning time to support this.

The amount of paperwork and energy just one SEND kid takes up is ridiculous. I’ve got like 6 and they’re years behind their peers. And, somehow, the expectation is that magically we progress them despite the fact that they left the curriculum years ago.

They’re lovely kids but it’s cruel to put them in mainstream schools, and it’s unfair to teachers.

Years and years ago we regularly got kids coming into yr 7 who had obvious learning delays

Before SATS – say what you like at least it identified needs

It’s not that we don’t identify early, it’s that the waitlists are long, support is limited and funding for any therapy, 1.1 support or assessments is non existent! We have 8 children who have 1.1’s but none are funded, that’s 8 members of full time staff that are coming directly from our main budget. I could identify an SEN child on their first day of Nursery, they will still be waiting 2/3 years later to see a paediatrician for a diagnosis. Make it make sense!

The **only** kids this will pick up are the super obvious ones, who should already be being picked up.

The marginal kids who need a *little* support often don’t show real symptoms of struggle until they are much older, and even then, they don’t need stigmatising, or labelling as other, but just some simple adjustments to manage well in the school environment.

    Oh, good. More on me.

I’ve identified that about 8 of the children in my class have an unmet need. Now what? Am I getting specialist teachers or resources in? Am I getting additional training? Is this going to be funded or will I stretch myself and my TA even further? Which children shall I not give enough of my time to today? Will the parents listen and be supportive?

    I need a new career.
