The Atlantic salmon has been native to the UK for centuries, long before the norman conquest. Since 2006, their numbers have fallen by between 30 to 50 percent.

Their survival is being threatened on multiple fronts, including from climate change and pollution to the spread of invasive non‑native species such as the Humpback salmon and Asian clam. The latter, which is known to have a very high reproductive rate and can reach high densities quickly.

This has made it much more difficult for them to find suitable habitat and spawn, as they’ve experienced growing competition for space and food.

It’s thanks to careful monitoring and swift intervention that their numbers are beginning to recover.

Even the salmon in the photo looks shocked at the news.

Seriously though, this is good to hear.
