      The downside would be that a united EU would be significantly easier to bribe/ lobby.
      Brussel is already being besieged by lobbyists, but the structure of the EU makes it less effective since the individual countries have to vote on it as well.

      Washington is what this would look like in practice.

      Europe and the EU bonding together is a strong and necessary survival mechanism in the rough realities of the 21 century.

      The EU being dominated by (on individual level fine but on societal level) non sensical ideals is also true.

      That would be cool. Will we have also shared medicare in this case? For example for romanians, paying taxes in Romania and getting free medicare in Austria for example? Will that happen under united states.of europe?

      Maybe a bit off topic, but I’m pretty sure Trump will try to pull off something similar in Greenland – a military operation to establish US control, possibly timed to coincide with America’s 250th birthday. The rules-based order is definitely dead. Federalization may not be the solution, and there will surely be a lot of skepticism around it, but Europe cannot afford to be at the mercy of the US.

      It’s pretty obvious and I wish it would happen in my lifetime. We must weed out the pro russian / pro USA lobbies and understand how much they cloud everybody’s judgement. There is no future for solitary entities in Europe.

      Guess what big states chew up? Small states.

      A united state Europe is required and the natural progression of tgings

      Only more so when the US feels free to invade anyone for any reason.

      Up until this morning my basic assumption was that Trumps war mongering was all talk. If he will go into Venezuela he will have just as few problems going into Greenland and other places. At this point our protection amounts to whatever qualms his advisers still have to stabbing the US’s closest allies in the back.

      I think the sad reality for Europe is that we don’t we don’t have democratic support for survival. We all want our social benefits and money more then survival of the whole.

      As long as you rework how the EU is right now, sure. Currently it’s like the US except we don’t decide who becomes “president” and what gets proposed is done by the European Commission which isn’t elected but decided by said “president”.

      If you want a good, “United States of Europe”, you frankly need to look a bit at how the US is set up with its constitution and how people are elected. Doesn’t have to be an exact copy obviously, the main point should be both to ensure that smaller countries cannot be railroaded (not saying that happens now but it’s important to keep in mind when structuring a new system), make sure that regular people can have a say on all levels of said union and have a shared constitution so that rights cannot be stepped on, like freedom of speech.

      Of course, a group of countries that form a unity are stronger, but is there the will by all those countries to form a federation?

      I thought about the more recent countries that used to be federations. Countries whose States have originally always been part of them or got federated not so recently are faring relatively well and quite united (Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, USA, Brazil, India). Countries whose States federated more recently had a different fate (Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Soviet Union) because the process of integration of different populations with different demands and requirements have become more and more difficult and in the end collapsed.

      France and Lithuania, Sweden and Bulgaria, Italy and Finland, have all different ways of dealing with politics, finance, economy, education, health care and so on. To make them agree on just one way could be very difficult unless all of the EU countries are ready to accept some kind of compromise that, of course, could fully satisfy no one but at least would be a first step to a federation. That’s what Mario Draghi recommended, but the disagreements amongst European Union countries we see so often don’t leave much to be hoped for in the short term future, at least.

      We don’t need to be ruled under one banner, all we need is strengthened defensive pacts and strategies.

      We all commit to spending more on military and intelligence and we work closer together to protect borders, air and sea.

      The united states of Europe is entirely pointless and would be just as corrupt as USA and Russia.

      Would European countries surrender a modicum of sovereignty to join a “United States”-style form of government? I understand the economic and military alliances of the EU and NATO, for example, but how is France going to react when a US-style Europe enacts a unified trade policy that hurts airbus exports? How will Belgium and the Netherlands react when a US-style Europe enacts legislation that causes shipping imports and exports to plummet?

      I just don’t see how this works, unlike in the US where the fifty states – by default – surrender sovereignty on major economic (e.g., tariffs, interstate commerce regulation) and cultural (e.g. gay marriage, gun ownership) questions. The comparison is simply apples to oranges.

      Europe should focus more on developing economic and military strengths rather than a pipe dream of *increased* ties in other areas.

      Calling it a United States of Europe is just feeding opposition. A federal Europe is a necessity but the name itself is so tainted that it becomes such a low hanging fruit for anyone against stronger integration.
