>There were 765 people arrested for driving under the “influence of an intoxicant” between 1 December and 5 January, according to the latest figures from An Garda Síochána.
>Over half, 56%, were for driving under the influence of alcohol and 44% were drugs releated.
>The figures also show there were 26 road deaths and over 70 serious crashes during this period.
If these are the number actually *caught*, it’s horrifying to imagine how many other people went undetected on the roads while under the influence.

Am i right or wrong in thinking that testing for drug use while driving can give positive results long past the point where you’d be under the influence of them?

Fantastic results.
It works out as .817 arrests per county per day….

Imagine how many are not getting caught!

I’d imagine a good portion of this was people who smoked a bit of weed 3 days prior

That’s very low?

Absolutely scandalous that people in this day and age still think it’s perfectly ok to get behind the wheel while under the influence. They’re obviously oblivious to the carnage and devastation they can cause.

And we wonder why we have so many fatalities…

I drove 2200km between the 23rd and 1st. I didn’t see a single garda car or checkpoint. What I did see was plenty of dangerous and erratic driving and at least 3 or 4 late at night on country roads going very slowly, that I suspected of drink driving.
If 765 were caught, there must be thousands of people drink driving. No wonder road deaths increased last year. The police presence just isn’t there. The only way people will stop is if they think there is a reasonable chance they will encounter a Guard on their journey. As of now that chance is really really low, unfortunately.

I know guy who crashed, did a runner because he was out the night before, got his brother to go back to the accident and say it was him driving. The brother did cocaine the night before and failed the swab. Garda have the cctv and know what happened so they’re all fucked!

Drunk driver killed both my parents back in the 90s.
Much of his argument was like the ‘but wait, whatabout…’ replies in this thead.
